As many of you will be aware, fuel companies can already add up to 5% Ethanol (E5) to petrol without telling us and many are. In fact, by 2013, they will be forced to. We are being assured that 5% will not cause any damage to older cars. Does anyone know whether this is the case and which companies are currently adding the 5%?

Going forward, E10 (10% Ethanol) fuel is also on its way to us this year. It is NOT compatible with the 993 and older Porsches (See list).

http://www.porsche.com/uk/accessoriesandservice/cl...

Whilst in theory, E5 (5%) will be available for some time to come, the oil companies are stating that they will phase it out, leaving us eventually stuck with E10.

So what is the solution for older Porsches once E10 is the only fuel?

Fuel stabiliser additives ?
Changing all the 993's hoses ?
Changing the fuel lines, maybe even the tank ?

It probably won't be big deal when it actually all kicks off.

I hope you are right fella. E10 has caused a right stink in some of the countries it has already been released in, especially Germany.

It will be ok . remember when 4 star was phased out ( i was a wee nipper then ) i remember my brothers friends wringing their hands , sacrificing virgins ( couldnt find any near croydon ) and painting " the end of the world is nigh " placards .
Where theres a will theres a way , it may cost though ...

It's a dastardly plan thought up by water cooled Porsche owners to wipe the smug grin off air cooled owners faces smile

Nobody seems to know exactly what parts will need changing if any mind you....

Most super unleaded will still be 5% so use this in the short term - but fuel lines are now service items on older cars and need changing at least every 2 years, and often sooner.

That seems to be the advice from Porsche and should be ok.

Really? I would be pretty hacked off if they needed changing that frequently since the majority of them have served up to 20 years so far.

The rubber used in fuel lines is the most obvious issue but in older carburetor models there are various internal parts and seals than can be denatured by Bio-fuel. eek

I'm sure that folk like Baz, GTone, Promax etc.. will create all inclusive packages to convert the car. Just turn up, drop your car off and they'll sort it.

You could try leaving one of said lines in a bottle of vodka as a scientific test. Just in case there is a millenium bug scaremonger thing going on.

Brazil cars have been running major ethanol for years. Would be interesting to get their opinion.

I WORK ON THE PETROL TANKERS DELIVERING FUEL FOR THE VERY LARGE COMPANY WITH THE TIGERS ON THE PUMPS AND TRAILERS.
AT THE MOMENT THE NORMAL UNLEADED IS BIO BUT THE SUPER UNLEADED ISNT. WILL TRY AND FIND OUT FROM THE PLANT BOYS WHAT PLANS ARE BEING MADE. NOT SURE WHAT SHELL AND BP ARE DOING AS THEY RUN OUT OF A DIFFERENT TERMINAL TO US BUT WAS LISTENING TO SOMETHIN ON RADIO ABOUT THIS AND THEY WERE SAYING THE SAME......OLDER CARS WILL HAVE TO USE SUPER AT XTRA COST TO NORMAL UNLEADED.
PERSONALLY I ONLY USE THE 3 MAJORS IE BP,SHELL,ESSO. I NEVER USE SUPERMARKETS AND ONLY USE OTHER FUEL COMPANIES IF ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, BUT THATS JUST MY PERSONAL PREFERENCE, AND I ALWAYS USE THE SUPER OR V POWER.

They can go longer but are noticeably soft after a year (depending on how the car is used). Early 911 race cars now change annually.

Dont be in any doubt the rubber pipes do go mushy , anything over 12 months u ve done well .......i run a '72 911 almost daily on varying types of fuel here and in Europe ,have tried many Brands of pipe ...........currently have one thats lasted 15 months and still nice and hard ............engine 109 000 miles never been other than serviced normally , clearly nothing getting eaten away in there ......i hope !

Symptoms of failing , does nt start well at extreme wont rev over 4000 rpm as pipe softens and as petrol sucked through pipe implodes cutting off supply ............at very extreme if it smells its leaking BEWARE !

Sorry to say no scary myth ...its all very real
