Was just investigating why im getting a drumming sound on braking in the alfa 159.

Ok the pads are very low, but that shouldn't make any noise till there is no pad left.

But on closer inspection the rear pads have started crumbling!

Why would they do this? there not cheap ones either, ferodo.

Well i have just ordered some new ones as i don't like the idea of them crumbling to nothing

But surely they shouldn't do this?

Oh and the front calipers are a thing of beauty cloud9

Do you mean the edges of the contact material are chipped or is it the actual centre of the pad that's disintegrating?

Mine are doing exactly the same thing, and to a certain extent my discs! Needless to say they are getting replaced today. It's very odd though, never seen it before.

Would these pads have come from Ebay by any chance?

Got some top brand pads of there a year or so ago and they crumbled, checked the box against the replacement set I cbought from local motor factors and they were poor copies imo but too hard to prove to pursue. Similar stories from people I spoke to about it at the time.

The car was from a lease company previously, so i can't imagine so.

They will most likely be cheap blueprint type pads.

Well I think the inside pad may have been the cause.

If it was a lease car they have probably been Hedgehogged.

Was going to say it's usually due to excessive heat build up but you seem to have found this out yourself smile

It's always worth whipping the wheel off to check the inner pad when you can see the outer one is getting a bit low wink

Blueprint - as in the brand..?

Have you had this happen to Blueprint pads?

You might want to change your rear discs after that.

Blue print are actually quite a good brand for Japanese and American stuff. People slating them have obviously never used their products.

I'm guessing he means 'pattern', I.e. usually geometrically correct but inferior in materials/quality.

Yes, sorry, my bad. I mean stty knock offs, not that half decent blueprint brand.

To be fair the brand of the pads can't really be blamed if someone has ran them down to bare metal. At least I hope not, I've just ordered some Ferodo brake shoes!
If the outer pad has a lot more material left I'd be checking and re-lubricating the sliding pins on the caliper, de rusting and coppaslipping the pad carrier where the pads touch it.

Aah, I see, thanks for clearing that up, only because I regularly use Blue Print parts and find them to be very good indeed.
