Folk, I'm seriously considering either a 996tt or 997tt (currently own a 986s).

Ignoring the obvious price differences and depreciation and all that boring stuff; given a nice, say, 40,000 mile 996tt or a nice 40,000 mile 997tt (both tiptronic) which would make the 'better' car on a day to day basis? Which is the more rewarding drive both on the road, occasional track, Euro road trip etc.

Looking for opinions from folk who've driven/owned both ideally. A 'mate in the trade' who shall remain nameless suggested that 997 build quality was 'rubbish' and the '6tt was the far superior car and I'd be a fool to consider any 997...

As said, for the time being ignore cost differentials, it's ownership/driving opinions that I'm interested in.

Thanks in anticipation.

997tt is a step up in every aspect. Still has the Mezger and with VTG turbos and the 997 interior... and there is no problem in terms of build quality.

Here is my favourite video that sold me 100% on the 997tt - had to get it! smile

In tip form, neither car is particularly visceral, so I would be looking for value - the 6T is ludicrously cheap right now and the two cars are not a million miles apart.

Not sure what is meant by "build quality". If your friend means interior trim, the 6 is hopeless. I had almost every plastic item repainted or replaced. Otherwise the mechanicals were faultless for the 18 months that I had my high mileage car.

Driven the 996 turbo not the 997 turbo.

All things being even and not worried about money I'd take the 997 turbo as it is newer, interior is nicer (IMO) and it's the next evolution.

However if you want to upgrade it the 996 turbo is more cost effective to get into and has plenty of scope for upgrading!

Agree. I had a 6tt for 3yrs which i loved (and 5 other 911's over time). Now have a 7tt.

Both seriously quick, both interiors similar. Both great cars.

But 7tt is far superior in terms of:

suspension... the difference is remarkable. no idea how they do it, but it's in a totally different league to the 6tt.

clutch is much lighter (being hydraulic) and therefore better in traffic.

like the suspension, the steering is really different, better weighted, firmer and sharper.

my 6tt didn't have sport chrono, but it's worth it on the 7 for sure.

in my view the 7tt is a more contemporary shape/look.

Put all that together and i think the 7tt is unequivically a much better car.

997.1 turbos have the Mezger and tip. 997.2 turbos have the DFI engine and PDK.

I would have thought it fairly obvious that ignoring price and depreciation the 997 is going to be a better car. However, how realistic is it to ignore price and depreciation? 6Ts are seriously amazing value at the moment. 7Ts are quite a bit more, and are not near the bottom of their depreciation curve.

ETA: 6T wheels aren't great to look at, but 7T wheels suck balls.

Thanks for opinions chaps - keep 'em coming. As said - ignore the financial side of things. I only drive autos so am only interesrested in the tip boxes. Should have said that PDK cars are still a little out of range for me and there's the romantic association of the Mezger block of course...

I have a 997tt and came from a 996tt in the summer. The 997 definitely moves the game on, its so much more modern. Particularly as people have observed in relation to the interior but I think exterior wise too.

Performance wise the brakes are good step up and the car feels a lot 'tighter' but that may be in part down to my 996 being quite tired in the suspension department. Performance wise the 997 is faster certainly but not massively so. Saying that I came from a manual to a tip so its hard to be exact in comparison as you don't have the same shunt in the back from the gear engaging.

Id advise you go and look a couple and ideally drive them. No question the 996 is objectively more for the money but subjectively Im very happy with the move to the 997.

It's the reading it out loud that you need to progress from.

To correct, the 996tt has the same hydraulic clutch action as the 997tt so is just as light to operate.

Steering feel is subjective, in my opinion the 996 steering is far more communicative than that in the 997, which is numb by comparison.

No 996tt has sport chrono, it doesn't exist for the 996.

Personally I find 997tt in comfort too soft for spirited driving and in sport too bouncy and still not firm enough for track work. That said, the 996 suspension has way too much roll stock and on balance I would agree its nice to have some adjustablity via PASM even tho its nowhere near as good s it should be.

I would say that an average condition 997tt will feel a LOT better than an average condition 996tt - but a top example of a 996tts for instance is certainly a much closer and viable alternative.

Its called an abbreviation (tt for twin turbo - like C2 or C4S). You are perfectly at liberty to endlessly type Porsche 911(997) turbo tiptronic S at each use if you wish.
