So, a certain National fast fit outfit are offering a promotion whereby if you add them you your circle of friends through Google, you can receive 20% off an oil and filter change. I have used these guys before on my previous car, an Audi TT. They used the correct spec Castrol Edge synthetic 5w30 and a Unipart oil filter which was around £36.

Now, with this discount, the same oil change using the same Castrol oil comes in at under £30 which is a freaking bargain! You can't even get the oil alone for that at the moment.

By picking up other problems while you're in. Your tyres/brake disks need changing etc

They buy in bulk, plus it gets you in there and they get a sales opportunity, the cynic in me says that some places may not use the oil they say they do.

Well I suppose last time I was in, they did a "safety inspection" on the car but nothing was picked up. I was in an out within an hour.

Perhaps the less savvy motorist maybe seen as a cash cow for them.

This.

It's called a loss-leader in business terms. Same principal as M&S and their "Dine in for £10 deal". It gets you through the door, and how many people do you think walk out having spent £50 rather than the £10....

I got an oil change at one of these places once, for around £36.

Whether it was the oil they claim I will never know but they didnt find any other problems or even try to find any.

Reasonable happy overall.

Wasn't there a place which told an RX-8 owner his pistons or something needed replacing?

(The problem being a RX-8 doesn't use a piston engine)

Though had they said rotors, they would probably have been right wink

I'm fairly sure the bloke said the garage said the pistons needed replacing. The guy was annoyed about them being completely wrong about the car, I remember that.

Okay so you take your car in and it's on the ramp getting this £30 oil change done. The mechanic claims your thrunge duskets are in a dangerous condition and require urgent replacement, and while he's in there "you may as well" get the cross splanges and the thrust doohicky done.
They can't actually prevent you from paying your £30 bill and leaving, can they? so those in the know may as well take advantage, provided the work seems to be of a decent standard.

The point being that 90% of drivers aren't in the know and would probably pay up.

Yeah, but I just meant that had he said the rotors needed replacing as a complete blind guess, he would be odds-on to be right wink

If they "find" something that is broken / worn out and is "dangerous" then are they allowed by law to let you drive off without it being "fixed"?

Interested to know this as well. I'd guess so since then you couldn't get a second opinion.

Something along the lines of that, but you could have it picked up by trailer etc
We have the same idea at work (electrician), if we see something in a dangerous way we have to isolate it or "make safe"
Part of "duty of care"

It is a good deal and I've used them before for oil changes.Comes in cheaper than I could get the oil.
As already stated above they use it as a loss leader,if you take care of your car and have all the important bits such as brakes and tyres and exhaust in good condition they will let you be.I wonder how many people take on this great deal and go in with tyres and brakes almost shot.Again asks the question can they legally keep your car there until it's made safe/legal ?

I have not used a certain UK chain tyre fitter since they left the oil filler cap off my Capri when they did an oil and filter change and that was 1989.
