Volvo Penta reverse lock trouble
Discussion
Hello,
I have a Sealine 22 sports with a single Volvo Penta AQ175A V6 engine and 290 outdrive.
I think there¡¦s a problem with the reverse lock/retaining pawl. Scratch that ¡V I KNOW there is ƒº.
The revlock won¡¦t engage. Out of the water, I can put the boat into reverse (engine off) and lift the leg with my hand. It also lifted when under power in reverse in the water.
I¡¦ve heard that the ¡§hooks¡¨ can wear and slip off the bar they latch onto, but it won¡¦t even try to latch, in fact if I try to move it from ¡§unlatched¡¨ with my hand, it¡¦s stuck solid. The bar that hooks onto the gear selector shaft (the bit with two triangular plates you see when you¡¦re stood behind the boat with the outdrive cover off) is bent and loose, I assume when someone tried to force it into reverse, so I guess it¡¦s pretty solid. Any advice?
Is there a common fault that causes this, or am I going to have to try and find a decent second-hand mechanism?
Thanks,
Dan
PS This is likely to be the first of many questions, so thanks in advance for the others I¡¦m lining up!

Common fault but don't despair.
They all look as they are falling apart even when new. The whole unit when installed correctly should flop about quite freely. And the good news is you can just order the individual parts as you need them from the likes of Volspec.

Quite difficult to explain the action of all the parts without it all in front of you but every part in that circled 30 is important to be correctly fitted and in shape. I can put one back together from scratch now in just a couple of minutes but first timers will scratch their heads for some while working it out to start with.

Thanks Motorvator. Not in Norfolk are you?
'Fraid not mate but have cousins with a boatyard up there and still stay in contact with a race engineer up there too. If you're stuck PM me but really once you take it apart you'll work it out.
Just reading your initial post again you might be a bit confused as to what part does what. The rod off the gear selector goes down through the steering tube and pushes against part number 40 in the diagram and yes it will look bent and loose because it's meant to be like that.
The key to it all working is all those parts in the group 30 being sprung and they won't actually grab the bar unless there is slight pressure against part 40 holding it down. It gets that by the rod falling down the hole
It will give the impression of the hooks, as you put it, being worn out and only just capturing the tilt bar but it is intentionally fine so that the drive cannot get stuck in place and do damage if you hit something or dry out with it stuck in reverse. Full throttle reverse will be enough to pull it free.
