Following a fairly recent post (Nov 2011) following the need for a small journal crank and block (I will try to find link later) I am considering replacing my AJP V8 with a second hand engine simply due to cost limitations.

The crank is worn and block is heat damaged and rather than going for a total bottom end rebuild with a small journal crank and block (hard to find) I am looking for a decent second hand AJP engine to drop in.

The Cerb in question is a P reg so it'll need to be an early AJP.

Anyone have one going spare? Or can point me in the direction of a half decent one sitting in someone’s garage? I've trawled a few breakers and such but no luck.

Cheers for the help.

Why buy an early AJP? Surely you are looking for a decent 4.2 AJP engine? I wouldnt restrict myself to a specific year of engine etc....
A decent engine is likely to be £2.5K I guess? Plus fitting etc so could easily be a minimum £4K bill?

I have one you could have for not a huge amount of money depending on howuxh of it you want. If you just want the block and heads (known as a tall engine) then I'm sure we could come to a deal as I can use the other bits. smile

Yea might be false economy to do that. If the crank snaps (heaven forbid) the block will probably be toast.

Thanks for the replies ridds and tafford, how can I get hold of you both to discuss in more detail?

Gazzab - correct me if i'm wrong, and I had considered it, but dropping in a newer AJP will most notably have a different crank. Fine if its the entire engine but I am under the impression that the drive shaft, amoungst other things will need modifying / changing as well?

I have been informed that is not quite as simple as just dropping the engine in if its a newer AJP. Particularly if it pushes the cost up toward the complete rebuild price bracket, in which case I may as well just do that.

Drop me a PM through my profile on here.

You could well put a later engine in. There should be no complications really, although to keep it fairly straight forward it would be best to carry on with the 4.2.

Do you have the later clutch/bell housing? As I have this as well.

Douglas Valley / Steve Strange has an early 4.2 (with a hole in the sump) on eBay for £1300, from memory its engine #223. They been trying to sell it on and off for ages, so you might well get it for less.

as people have said look for a later engine even if you have an early type clutch/bellhousing/flywheel it will still fit onto a later engine, you will need a couple of oil hoses as the pump is different but thats all, also later blocks were cast different to make them stronger in the head stud area.
