I have a lovely 996 carrera 4 cabriolet tiptronic which really looks the part and I thoroughly enjoy. However, I am thinking of changing it for a manual 996 turbo. I went in a friend's about 8 years ago and recall the stunning performance (especially in the wet!!) and just really fancy one now. Has anyone got a view on which model and why?

I guess as a 'newbie' on the forum, I am seeing what opinions are out there - chatted with JZMachtech today and they are very bullish about the 996 turbo ahead of the 997 - bulletproof engine, loads of performance etc.......anyone offer first hand experience (positive or negative)?

Its fairly obvious question I would say. Stick with Carrera 4 or sell and buy 996 Turbo.

Don't know what the C4 is like Simon as I've never driven one. I went from 996 C2 to 996t just under twelve months ago. Mine's a tiptronic but even in that guise the performance is a step up - much quicker than the n/a C2 (and C4 I would imagine)! I've been really happy with mine and I would say go for it. Others, I am sure, will tell you that the 996 turbo, at the prices it's at at the moment, is a bargain super car, (even the technician who services mine told me that).
If you do decide to take the plunge imho it's worth spending a little bit more to make sure you buy in good condition and full service history essential as there are some out there which shall we say are in less than good condition.

Funny you mention the handling, what you have is better, the TT is faster.

Cheers.

Ok I'll bite - how does a narrow body cab handle better than a turbo?

No brainier it's like Kelly Brook asking you for a shag and then posting on a forum asking whether you should or not. I would buy a turbo for the engine alone it's a gem and made of granite compared to chocolate thumbup

You were probably speaking with Russ at JZ Machtech, might be biased as he drives a 996 turbo wink

Plenty of info on the merits of standard vX50 on PH.

The main year change is go for a facelift car 2002 MY which is easily to identify as it has a glovebox.,

The X50 is meant to have more lag than the standard turbo but I haven't driven the X50 so that's just from reading PH.

The weight of the hairdressing tools & products in the boot balance out the weight distribution.

Is the facelift model also when they changed the service interval to 2 years? i.e. if buying a 2002 car best to get the later model?
I was actually talking to Rob at JZM - the young but seemingly knowledgable and definitely enthusiastic sales guy - found him very helpful. I think Russ has a heavily tweaked turbo...

Although face lifted car appeared in 2002 it's only 2004 and after models where the service intervals changed to every 2 years - mine's 2003 and service intervals are 12 months.

IIRC a 2 year service interval car has number 4 at digit 10 in the VIN..........feck you learn some crap when buying cars!
