New cayman S £50k. New 911 £90k
Discussion
Ok so I love the '911' , there I have said it. But almost twice the price for a new 991 over a cayman?!
Is it really twice as good? Not That I am about to walk into a dealer with my cheque book open, but if I was
Option 1) new cayman and ferrari 550 for the weekend
Option 2) new 911
Hmmm..

If you have kids, its either a 911 or nothing. That is why Porsche rinse you for another £40k :P
Is it twice as good? Of course not, diminishing returns kicked in with the introduction of the 2.9 Cayman and Boxster.
If you do not have kids, stick to the mid-engined cars, you won't be able to for long.....

The Cayman is an older generation - new one will be £5-10k more than the out going.
Plus....running two cars is much more than running one. A guy with a single £100k car is spending less imho than a guy with 2 £50k cars. Insurance alone (on a Ferrari / Porsche would be £1500+ for me), takes care of that.
I agree the Cayman is an awesome car.
If you go to the Porsche website you can't get a £72k 991 I would want. And yes it just does seem to be an extra £40k for two extra seats. Now that is an expensive option.
It is all a bit silly but I am sure many people have commented before that the cayman has been held back so it does not compete too much with its bigger brother. Not really sure where I am going with this, but would be interesting to see how much profit porsche was making on each car.

I bet you they don't sell that many, if any, at that price. Whereas a large percentage of Caymans will be within £50k.SS7
Why add another £20K to VAG's bottom line to turn it into a slightly faster 911Lux?

I would be surprised if a base 997 cost much more than 10% more than a base Cayman S to produce. I know we now have the 991 but they cannot be compared directly. Most of the extra selling price for the 911 will be pure profit - because they can get away with it. All in my personal opinion with no firm figures, just a manufacturing background with a global multinational.

Sure, that's how it works, a 64gb iPad does not cost £160 more to produce than a 16gb one. etc etc Edited by Mermaid on Tuesday 10th January 20:23
Cayman is a great sportscar in its own right.
The 911 is a great icon in its own right.
Is the 911 twice a Cayman? Not as a car in objective performance terms.
But if you really 'get' what makes the 911 special as a driver and owner, a 911 is worth multiples that of a Cayman.
Give it time, and no other sportscar gets under your skin like a 911.

I have a Spyder, and two kids (and a wife)

I had a 911, and two kids (and a wife)

Don't be defeatist, it can be done.

A 911 is not twice as good as a ford focus?
I think you'll find it is.... Significantly more than twice as good as a focus...
To the point where the focus is looking like a really expensive car...,
... Unless its a £2k st170, but the closest you'll get to a 911 for £4k is a 4 pot boxer with the VW badge on the lid!!

1. Ferrari 550 and year old Boxster Spyder, and a weeks hollibobs in Barbados
2. Nicely specced 991.
Now there's a head-scratcher.
I specced a 991 on the configurator - ended up at £79500, without having gone mad.
I did do one configuration as an experiment and ended up over £100k, which means you could spec an S up to £110k plus.
(If you want a laugh, select 'Lime Gold' as an exterior colour, with wheels in exterior colour and PCCB - the yellow calipers and the green wheels clash fantastically. I went with a red interior - it was gloriously horrible.)

I did that a while ago. Yellow car, brown hood and red wheels with blue leather. That would be a brave call..
£90k for a cooking 991 or for the same sort of money (and less depreciation) you could have
