Turbo cars give a lot of mid-range torque, similar to diesels. It makes them seem much quicker than they are. Ultimately if you revved it round to 6000rpm you'd probably be a little dissapointed.
+1I drove a '10 plate VW Polo with this type of engine, felt very much like a diesel & quick enough, that is until you started running out of puff early in the rev range. Driving my partners similar sized R56 Cooper S afterwards felt like a rocket ship.
* Yes I realise the R56 is a turbo also, however it has a lot more power to go with it!

I have the twin-charged (turbo/supercharger) version of that 1.4 in my Fabia, where it makes 180bhp.
Many of the manufacturers seem to be concentrating on smaller, turbocharged petrol engines as they can offer decent fuel economy and the kind of lazy torque that most drivers like but without the nasty (but non-CO2) emissions like NOx, SO2, etc and a quieter idle.
