I know this is going to get a biased reply but thought I would ask anyway, am looking to change my Boxster S for either an M3 (E46) or a 997 S, the M3 in question is an Active supercharged car, which goes like a rocket ( I think the its the quickest thing I have ever driven) the car IMHO needs a bit of work (removal of all the 'boy' carbon fibre bits, easy job) or looking at much newer/expensive 997 S, anyone one here owned both and could offer a balanced opion?

thanks

The porsche!

without a shadow of doubt, and i like M3's, but not one like that..

surely a V8 M3 is more comparable..

Totally different cars, and it depends on what you want. Would never compare the two, but since you already are, I'd wager the M3 is more up your street?

The supercharged M3 will give very instant gratification performance thrills/laughs that the 997 does not, and does not try to do either.

I'd say that the 997 would be a keeper, the M3 would be a short term, have a laugh & sell it on car?

The 911 everytime. I have owned a 997S and currently have the E90 M3 and the 997 is a better car in every respect (apart maybe, from the noise). Personally can't see any competition between a 997 and a tricked up M3

Ive currently got both cars manual 997 & SMG 'vert E46 m3 2004... anyway thoughts are...

If you spend a lot of time around towns centres then try to get an auto. The 911 is more much comfortable than the M3 and the power is much more useable. I find you really need to rev the M3 to get it to go anywhere. On the 911 it has loads of low down power available so its a lot easier to drive. M3 sounds miles better than the 911.

I prefer the SMG on the M3 to the manual on the 911 but then i hate driving manual cars anyway. Much more space in the M3. Interior build quality is a fraction higher in the 911 too and a bit 'fresher' looking and the BOSE is a good sounding system too.

For some reason i feel the 911 is a more fragile car. Running costs are comparable between the 2 cars and MPG is more or less the same as well. Parts prices from non dealers like design911 seem ok an on par with M3 spare prices for brakes, oil etc

Both are great looking cars!

Sneaky crap pic of both mine: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v233/Paddymcc/ca...

If it were me i'd be looking at a V8 M3 rather than some tuned E46.

I've owned both (haven't we all!?!!). The 911 is a proper step up - a much more focused driving machine.

They're both great but unless you need rear passenger space, 911 wins EVERY time.

I think you will be VERY dissappointed with a 911 unless its a GT3, what about a Boxster Spyder instead - probably the best and most fun road car Porsche have ever made - stunning too!

911's are for bearded old men, with way too much money - an M3 (E30/36/46) a PH'ers wet dream - the Spyder is just that too.
