Should i get an estate?

hi all, looking for some advice from parents! We now have a 3month old, and want to upgrade the old Focus. We struggle to get the buggy and extra bits in the boot now, so i will be looking to get a larger car, mondeo size. But not sure if i we should get an estate, or just get a hatchback as the boots on these size cars are pretty big. I'll hopefully have the car for 5years'ish, and will try to have another child in a few years. I'm happy to get an estate, but my wife isn't keen..

We got one when our twins were born and I would't go back now. The main advantages are that there is no 'lip' on the loading area so you don't need to lift the buggy over, you can just slide it in or out. Also, you can stack things right up to the roof if needed. It probably makes more of a difference with 2 kids and a double buggy but it still makes things a little easier and the last thing you need with a kid is a harder life!
When mine was 3 months old (baby, not the car!) I went out a purchased a Passat estate. It's huge and means I can chuck what I want in the boot and not worry about it. Pushchair, high chair, bags, suitcases when on holiday etc etc. The low boot lip makes it so much easier than a hatchback/saloon in my opinion.
However it's our only car and so fecking boring to drive. It's also an arse to park and the wife doesn't like driving it.
It's being sold for a Octavia vRS or possibly a 3 series touring. We'll use a roof box for those very occasional times when we need more space. Despite having number 2 child on the way we think a mid size estate is the way forward.

I've got a Mondeo hatch with two kids.
Wish I'd got the estate
The boot is bloody massive (which is negated by wife's need to fill it with useless rubbish), but it's more awkward to get stuff in & out than my old estate.
If there's any chance of having three kids in the lifetime of the car, you'll end up looking at 6/7 seaters. It's very very hard to get three standard car seats into the back of any car these days.

I don't think you need an estate; surely a large country house would be enough?
More seriously, we have a Mondeo diesel estate family wagon; love it - throw all the house in the boot, the dog still fits and off we go.
Not much status and keep looking at A6 / Merc E to replace; but VFM keeps the Ford in the garage

That's why I suggested a Focus Estate - she's used to driving a Focus so it shouldn't be a big shock. The extra space should be enough without needing a much bigger car, which was what my OH was worried about but is now very happy with the V50.spats said:

Thats exactly it. Boring maybe, usefull? In bucket loads. In fact I'd go so far to say that if you can only have one car in the house, then make it an estate .Curiously, in relation to the O/P . My son wants a Merc "C" class estate, his dearly beloved will have none of it though..saloon all the way.
Have us blokes become sensible over the years?
