i've been wondering out loud about these cars for a while now, & i still really like them.

as marky has recently said on another thread the market seems pretty stagnant for them at the moment, not quite sure why really? there are a coulpe on the PH classifieds that just haven't shifted at all & they've been up for sale for a long time.

if, & it's still a big if for me, i were to take the plunge what do poeple think? i'm not after the out & out fastest car on track but a few subtle mods should see one of these making a lot of sense.

this one looks lovely but it has the wrong seats:

then there's a coulpe of p'headers cars:

nothings screaming "want that one" to me, but i do like the idea of a clubsport.

not a CS but an interesting whatch none the less....

Hey Craig!

I absolutely love these cars and owned a 968 for a couple of years.

Are you going to use it as a track day car or every day car?

I really like the Sports with leather seats and a/c. When I was looking the coupe and sport models were generally in better condition to the club sports.

Asking prices are all over the shop from £6k on Coupe Tiptronics to £20k+ for the supercharged one - not sure about the black stripe down the middle and those wheels...

Most used reviews state the Club Sport should be the cheapest but has always been the opposite from what I remember.

£12k would be an okay budget for a good 968 in any flavour but maybe not from PH :-)

My biggest issue with them.
That white one looks lovely. Colour coded cup1s always look best. No buckets though so that would rule it out for me.

I'm also very interested in these at the moment - CS's and Sports. I can imagine having one of these tucked away in the garage for the summer months. Should probably have a drive of one first to make sure it's right for me before I get too carried away, although I doubt it will disappoint going by what the owners on here say about them. smile

admittedly you won't, but i fail to see how people bemoan the engine note & yet love things like mk2 rs2000's?? it's a four pot engine, they just have their own sound i guess?

anyway, my problem is more along the lines of this:
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3528255.htm

although quite different & it's never really fair comparing different cars from different era's, price point they're not that far apart. the club sport woulod be garaged away & a second car needed, but the Z4M would be daily driver & track car rolled in to one.

decisions decisions..... rotate

I had one for a year or so, for both road and track. All the legends about handling are true, suprisingly so when you think its very close to being a 944 S3. I have had both and the 968 felt much better balanced, particularly more forgiving if you got it a bit wrong in slow corners, and the 944 was good.

However compare to a 911 of similar vintage it just never felt a special place to be. The engine noise is part of it, but its more the whole package really, its just too normal!!

Very good to drive just not much of an occasion for me to keep as a long termer. I'm glad I had one though, well worth it

The engineering programme to develop the '68 was known by a 944S3 name. The '968' idea came along pretty late.

OP have you driven a Z4 yet? Had one on loan a few years back, revs climb up at an alarming rate.

yes i quite liked it i've got to say. i think it's more of the overall package i really like

quirky looks
fast
great manual gear change
epic engine
all the toys (ie interior a pleasant place to be)
good to drive

now, the 968CS has pretty much the same aprt from the interior not being as plush & it does without the epic engine, which can be forgiven if it's as good a drive s everyone makes it out to be

Far more kudos in a 968 too.

I Rember turning up to a party with a mate a while back in his new 968, one of the girl guests said quite genuinely 'like your new ford Capri'.

Can't get that comment out of my head whenever I think of buying one...Still makes me smile.

(but I know they are epic)

Yes the 968CS is special, you won't lose much in the process of buying and selling one quickly like the Orange beast. I feel it's more of a long term thing to use, track and enjoy, and learn more about it the more you drive it. On the other hand, the Z4M is a polished all round machine, a bit of all in one package. I think you need to get them both out of your system!

I turned up in mine to a 997 launch event at OPC Reading and a (female) passerby said "Is that the new Porsch?".

Good thread and a couple of clips I haven't seen before. The 968 sounds great revving next to the M3.

I love M cars too, my problem is I tend to just use and abuse them as they're more of an everyday car. I'm really hoping this doesn't happen with whatever I buy next, as that's going to be used everyday in the summer.

Had no idea the Z4Ms were down to that price. I still love these though :-

Good post. Good insight and a bit of balance to talk me down. It's still a 964 I'm searching for. I think Id find a 968 the same as you did. Great when flatout on track but I don't think I'd be going to the window just for a sneaky peek of it on the drive, like I do with a 911. smile
