High Speed Wheel Balancing

Most tyre dealers seem to balance your wheels on a machine off the car. These seem to be good for speeds up to around 85/90mph. I used to work at Volvos and we would have some customers that used to travel in Germany on the Autobahns regularly and complain about wheel wobble at high speeds, so we had a machine you sat on and balanced the wheel on the car. I was told this was better as it balanced out all the drivetrain, discs/driveshafts etc.
So how do they balance the wheels on Ferrari/Lambos etc? Same machine or something more advanced again.
I wouldn't fancy wheel wobble at 170mph+

i would see balancing on the car as a good way to overcome any defect/damage on the car

it would be a good way for a dealer to get out of doing warranty work imo

Used to have a capri that needed on car balancing.................probably because the suspension was st.

A good balancer should be able to get the wheel balanced well and high speed should not be a problem, never had a problem at up to 140mph on my 5er.

BUT........the machine can be set to be as precise as they want it to be, normally it is set to +/- 2gm, if that does not work get them to balance more precisely, if they claim they cannot do it, go elsewhere, it can be done by adjusting the machine tolerance down.

I think for high performance cars they use a hub adapter rather than a cone and a plate that fits through the actual bolt holes rather than a single clamp. I've also seen some places balance the wheel first, then again after mounting the tyre.

My car wheels were balanced off the car, with a decent machine and to tight tolerance. They were fine at 175mph. Normal high street balance would show wobble well below that. Some clever machines let you choose to save weights or do a more accurate balance.

F1 tyres are baalnced off the car. Veyron tyres are balanced off the car. Audi Rs6, Golf GTi etc etc etc

If your car is that shonky that it needs to have the wheels balanced on it. Then it's probably not wise to drive it very quickly!

Hope you realise that tyres can cause bad wheel balance, as well as rims.

When you balance wheels they have a Tyre on them. That's the fking point! To balance the WHOLE LOT. Takes into account any inbalance in the alloy and any inbalance in the tyre.

I've just started using dyna beads, first impressions are good, they are basically small ceramic beads that float around in the tyre & centrifugal forces cause them to distribute in such a way that they counter act any imbalance in the tyre/wheel. A plus is that you don't have any unsightly weights stuck on your wheels. Anyone else tried them?
