Spotted: Nissan Skyline GT-R (R33)

Harris inspired by an expensively tweaked and rare UK-spec R33 Skyline

One day I will own a GT-R. It won't be an R34, because I don't much like the way they look, nor did it capture my imagination like my first drive in an R33.

Of course I have no idea what this particular car is like to drive, but it looks the conkers, doubtless goes like Sonic Wind and will want to oversteer at every opportunity, like R33s always do.

Lots of mods but faithfully done

This was and is the fascination I have with the R33. Its HICAS gubbins seemed impossibly complicated at the time, but it almost always felt rear-wheel drive. Every other 4WD quickie was either neutral unless severely provoked or a nose-pusher but the GT-R was this breath of fresh air. Big, loud, full of character and mechanically confident: they just felt strong.

I reckon standard UK cars (and nicely tweaked ones) will soon be gaining value.

Would you have an R32 instead? Maybe. Black with some gold mag wheels. Yum.

S'funny. I've always thought the R34 looked much better;

To me the R33 looked a bit generic (jelly-mould even) of that era whereas the sharper lines of the R34 gave it the presence, definition and 'swagger' befitting of the performance on offer.

If you had 50 euros in your pocket and the choice of the R33 GT-R or the R35 GT-R, which would you choose for 2 laps of the 'ring?

You're not wrong there sonny, you're not wrong there.

A clean, unmodified R32 Skyline GTR would be a welcome addition to anyone stable.

Very nice 33 that and considering the higher price of a good 34, they're not really competing with each other so, if I had £14k in my back pocket (which the OH hadn't already ear-marked for a new kitchen), it could well be on its' way to the Midlands.

Alternatively like, I might save a bit more and get a Bayside Blue 34 cloud9

Oh, and Snorkel, I would like one lap in each car please, thank you very much. smile

Well, Newera have had a couple of clean, unmodified examples in over the last year but only have modded ones in stock now.

For something that's been fettled with, this is remarkably clean;

Prices on R32 GTRs are going up in Japan as retro cars are quite fashionable. I would be quite confident in saying they are going to start going up in price especially for clean examples. R33s are very much a marmite car, I prefer the R32 and R34 for looks and there is some generally accepted views that the R33 is softer than either an R32 or R34, it is defiantly the biggest of the three and people who have owned examples of each say the R32 is much more raw while the R33 is a better daily driver which brings up the same kind of discussion of the DC2 vs DC5 Integra. The older car is rawer but the later is more refined and up to date.

R34 GTR V-Spec II in black for me biggrin

R35
Standard it has about what this has in very very modded state.
I would trust the R35 to get all the way around the 14 mile circuit with melting.

..an R33GTR Vspec could never be deemed "soft" in a million years..its a bigger, better cruiser than the R32 but just as brutal/quick when needed.

R33 is the best version for me.. (including price etc)

Yes. The most "fun" car I ever owned. Still miss it too, erm, apart from the interior that is. Horrible!
