I've seen one that looks ok for a good price. What are the tips like to live with, do you lose much driving pleasure?

Primarily the car would be used for commuting.

I Have a tip and love it its quite lazy drive but fast when you kick down, However a manual is much more a drivers car more involving and gives you the oppertunity to keep it in the gear you want, great for track and mountain passes alike. on the moterway and genral cruising a tip will be fine, pays ya money and takes your choice tips are usually cheaper. that said for me the tip is good enough, hope that helps

Just like any old school auto. You need to drive one. It's not a Carrera S, no such 996.

Looks nice, honest & stright. you will get those who say inspection is a must, but it is a £9000 car & who much are these inspections? put it through a mot & see what that throws up & if its nothing you have a years ticket as well.

My old 996 was a tip & I loved it, I liked the constant drive. I have to say I drove a friend boxster & it was a manual & it felt faster then the 911 even though it wasn't but if I was to buy again it would be a tip as I am like you and would use it a primary car.

The last service was 2.5 years ago. I think that is a serious consideration.

The fact that there was also 24000 miles between 2 of the services just increases the risk.

Love tiptronics but you have to know how to get the best out of them. However that version of the tiptronic matched with the 3.4 is not the best match.

As MTR mentions the car has not been serviced for 2.5 years, get it checked out if serious the car cost the same as the replacement engine;)

btw you captainslow from lambo power

..I had a 996 tip for a year or so and ended up using it like an auto. The little change up/down buttons on the steering wheel were too fiddly and hard to find. It can lurch or get briefly stuck between gears at slower speeds so isn't a great auto either (worst of both worlds!) ...although fantastic to drive, especially once you're into 3rd gear and up, I would advise against them and go for the manual. It's not like there aren't many to choose from. You can, of course, find a local garage with one up for sale and take it for a drive.

I'd also consider avoiding ebay and use autotrader or PH classifieds. Find one that has been well looked after, regular servicing, perhaps a car which the last keeper has owned for a while, get the story on the car, make an offer and don't be afraid to walk away. As others advise, get it seriously checked out by an indie garage. It's well worth the £200 or your 10k car could end up costing you 15k or more...

Best of luck
