Run Flats, implications..
Discussion
So I've found a nice cheap set of part worn tyres for the P38. (Dont really want to spend 10% of the value of the car on new tyres!)
The set I have found are the right load etc, but are runflats. Any major issues with fitting these, or a no-no?
(wheels are 18", and the tyres are Continental 255 55 18 Runflat 4x4 Winter SSR

On an 18" rim the ride quality will be quite badly impaired I should imagine. I have them on a 17" rim and thats bad enough. Also, if the tyre gets damaged a lot of garages won't repair them because they can't guarantee the work.
Some things to consider.
Is that on a P38?Some things to consider.
If your vehicle didnt come with them as standard I should imagine they will feel very stiff indeed.
If your car did come with them as standard then they should feel normal
If your car came with Runflats and you are fitting non-runflats then I would expect the handling to feel soft as the engineers would have developed the car with runflats fitted and so should have taken into account their affect on ride quality.
I have runflats on the bimmer and whilst they are stiff they arent too bad- depends on your car and the roads around where you live I suppose.
Last thing- you should have tyre pressure monitoring fitted and activated when using run flats as they dont go flat when punctured - the stiff side wall keeps them roughly the same rolling radiusso you could overheat the tyre in a low pressure scenario and have the tyre delaminate if you dont know that its running at low or no pressure .
I was interested to note that BMW use the wheel speed as the inidcator of a flat tyre as when the tyre deflates and it runs on its sidewalls it reduces in rolling radius and therefore has to run quicker to keep up with the speed of the car...

Popular myth put about by BMW. If your car did come with them as standard then they should feel normal

Put proper tyres on your "designed for runflats" BMW and discover a whole new car that is better in every way.

MOT failure to have runflats and no Tyre pressure monitor.
Not according to the way I've read the manual. A TPMS warning lamp is a fail, no TPMS system when itwasn't fitted from new isn't.
Why do people make these claims?
