And over what time period/mileage?

I have to go with the second hand...
mileage? must be a troublefree weekend car.

I would have thought that if you wanted something with 500 bhp out of the box, a V10 M5/M6 would be your best bet. Quite a few M5s are below £20k now. Tempting!

Factory I would guess at a Merc CL600

~ 2003 onwards is 500bhp.

something Japanese with a turbo.

There are lots of supras and skylines about now with that sort of power for little money.

As standard, this is 500bhp pretty cheaply.

So do you want cheapest or most reliable?

As the saying goes:

Cheap, fast, reliable, pick two. You've already picked "fast".

Cheapest to run long term = big and simple

Slightly Modified Monaro / VXR8 would get you there and mechanically wouldn't stress it

But we are biased smile

Plenty of supercharged versions out there and they will be super reliable at that level.

Monaro VXR 500 comes to mind when factoring in overall costs I suspect.

Got to be less likely to through a stomach-turning bill than any CL600/M5/M6 etc.

Do they still sell the Bathurst S edition of the VXR8? Around 545bhp for £45k.
