Ubud Bali - anyone been ?

Been a couple of times when we stayed in Sanur. You are probably better staying in Sanur and hiring a bus for the day to go up there. Apart from the monkeys, a market and some great food theres not much else (going back a few years so may have changed).
We went over new year and it was superb.
I do recall buying some cheap dvds there tho on the last day and unwittingly I left my cash card in a machine (it gives you money then the card back) - only realised when I was at heathrow and had no cash.
Luckily the Halifax gave me back all the money that they guy after me took - he must had a couple of years off after that windfall.
My c/card got scammed there too to for a few k - I bought some shipping in china apparently. Took 3 years to get that wiped off.

There is a big restaurant next to the market. Take a look at the valley below from the outside deck of the restaurant and you'll see some of the best white water rafting on the planet. Then go do it. What a blast, especially after a hard rain. Ubud is beautiful but I'm not sure I could stay there for more than a day or two. Everybody's trying to sell you batik wood sculptures. But the scenery is outstanding.

Bali is great, I would stay at Kuta and can recommend http://www.kutaseaviewhotel.com It's right on the beach so you can please yourself to do the beach, nightlife (5 minute walk) or hire a car with driver or cab to take you around. A must do visit is to Jimbaran where they cook fresh fish of the day over open coals, it's awesome!

Just watch out for nightclubs and ticking suitcases....

ETA - sorry - read 'Kuta' for 'Ubud' doh.

It's was great, not like you describe although if you want a quiet place Kuta probably isn't for you. I can also recommend staying over on Nusa Lembongan, it's a small island with no cars and you can hire a beachside hut for around a tenner a night. There is a cove there called Dream Beach and it really lives up to it's name.Is Kuta no likened to the Blackpool of bali with loads of hammered aussies wandering about ? Not sure if would like that

Ubud is lovely - ex-hippie, tranquil type of place up in the hills - fantastic scenery, esp. if you stay in one of the hotels just out of town (we stayed in the Alila 6 years ago and it was great, one of Becs' colleagues honeymooned there last year and had an equally fab time). Really relaxed, some nice restaurants, craft shops...we enjoyed it!
Beach resorts are, essentially, the Aussie equivalent of Majorca - Kuta is the clubbing resort, Legian/Seminyak are trying to be upmarket but are still inferior to the better Thai/Malay resorts, and Nusa Dua is the family place. Sanur was alright, but a bit quiet. The quality of the sand, again, is nothing to write home about - Australia will have better beaches!

I went to Ubud for a day but the missus had enough after we had a rather fabulous lunch and a couple of hours mosying about the streets. She did have a point, the smell of animal piss and the number of mangey looking dogs started to get to her. I tried to argue that all the hot, skinny model type chicks made up to it but she wouldn't have it
