Looking at getting a new car soon, had it for 2 years and its time for a change.

Got a MK4 Golf GTI 1.8T just how, and looking for something that's a bit better on fuel because looking at moving out in the next year and need to free up some money rolleyes

Only got £2000-2500 to spend, so a diesel will be a hight mileage one so more likely to go wrong and cost ££££ to fix? confused So thought I might be better going for a smaller petrol. But do 15-20k a year and that's 70% motorway/A,B road driving and the rest town driving so need something with a bit of power for power taking.

Make's sense to go for a diesel but if anything goes wrong I might as well have got a petrol car...

Anyone got any advice/been in the same situation?

Cheers

Just give your car a good service and keep running it.

A dmf or injector problem on a diesel will wipe out any saving instantly, if something else goes then you'll really be losing out.

Read the thread about the guy who got a new kia that does about half the mpg he expected.

Is it worth all the effort and potential bills of getting a new car if you like your current one?

That's the main thing that worries me about getting a diesel to be honest...

Well my car's got 120k on it and it's going up quite fast! It's also going to need a timing belt, big service soon and at the stage were am staring to, need to replace everything on the car. Just feels like am throwing money at it just now. And just want a change more then anything.

Get a small cheap dare I say it disposable car for a few hundred Pounds. If anything breaks it would cost less to replace than repair in a lot of cases and you'd get £150 weighing the thing in.

I would get a petrol, a bit cheaper to fix when they do need some TLC in the engine department. If you get a small high revving one they aren't too sluggish, see the Focus 1.6 for example.
