I just fancied a little rant, why all of a sudden have people started reffering to every car with a squarish rear as a "Breadvan" first three threads i read this morning i have seen, EP3 CTR, 145 Cloverleaf and even a Z3M called "Breadvan"

Its similar to when everyone was calling thie estate car a "Wagon".

Sorry just need to vent a bit on a friday morn.

I thought that the Z3M Coupe was the car that originially made the 'breadvan' term a popular descriptive for some cars. But yes, it's a daft trend when applied to many cars (although I find it endearing when enthusiasts use it to refer to the Z3M).

Because they look like a breadvan?
Apart from hearses, then the term is "Deadvan".

I like the Mk2 Polo Breadvan.

Although the term breadvan was originally coined for the Ferrari 250GT, it has been used more recently to describe similar looking cars.

The Z3MC couldn't be any more of a 'breadvan' if it tried.

shooting brake normally refers to expensive, fast cars that have had an estate like bit bolted on the back, something you can get the guns, a few bottles of shampas and the pheasants in

this is the very definition of a shooting brake

I have a little Mk2 Polo Breadvan, love it.

Never understood how the term came about though. I just assumed bakerys used them for deliveries at a time?

The CTR has been called the breadvan pretty much since it came out for some reason. Just one of those things, it's certainly not a new nickname.

Z3M Coupe has been called the Breadvan since the dawn of time. Get over it.

I don't see the CTR one at all.

Z3M Coupes will always be breadvans to me, just like CSL's will always be Batmobiles.

A very old term that's been around since the begining of cars. Though seems to mean different things to different people.

In my book, a wagon/estate has four doors and a tailgate, the above have 2 doors (which would indicate hatchback/coupé) and a square box from the B-post rearwards.

Calling the 145 and EP3 'breadvans' is stretching it IMO, they're just hatchbacks with the Honda suffering the additional indignity of being of OAP-friendly height. smile

Amusingly, the first time I discovered the phrase was in Car magazine's review of the Z3M vs the Cerbera Speed 6 back in 1865.
