It's all in the title really,

I was at Leeds Uni eons ago, and my uni mates and I are having a reunion there next weekend. trouble is, none of us live nearby anymore, so we dont know the dives from the places to be.

looking for recommendations from the PH Leeds crew...

We're getting on a bit (all late 30's), so we dont want to be the oldest gimmers in the club!

a bit of sophistication wouldnt go amiss, but nothing too 'up its own backside'

many thanks!!

My usual recommendation would be mojo's, but from the last thread if this nature I'm not sure of it's future. I'm told it is still currently up and running though.

If you're late 30's I think you'll have to stay at home these days, place is nothing but a student-fest.

crikey. 3 replies and all of them a bit 'thumbs down'...

with regards to sophistication, i did only say 'a bit', I'm not expecting waitress service and umbrellas in the cocktails smile

Mine wasn't meant to be a downer, if mojo's is still open, it's awesome.

Full of dirty 50-year-old bags kitted out in leopardprint when I was last in there.

OP - can't really go wrong with Calls area really, mixed bag of ages and cultures who all tend to get on. Aire Bar's decent for a group, Call Lane Social Club (not a working men's club) is smaller but usually lively. The Palace is a bit quieter but a traditional bar with decent beers and near the cheap hotels you may well end up in. All decent haunts and several other good uns not too far away. The one exception is Rock Bar, which got great reviews when it opened but on both occasions I've been in has been knee deep in broken glass and pissed students.

The Hop at Holbeck urban village. http://www.thehopleeds.co.uk/
Great beer (micro brew), good lively atmosphere. Can be a bit loud sometimes depending on their choice of live music, but generally it's a good craic! I also love Mojo's and hope it doesn't change, when and if they do sell it. Smokestack on Lower Briggate can be fun (just don't fall down the stairs when exiting) and Sela Bar is tame but fun and is a great intimate bijou venue for good live bands.

Yep - I had the mis-fortune of going there at the end of a christmas do; a 50something year old lady with flashing bunny ears kept pinching my bum! (I'm 23).

Smokestack is my current favourite. Always a bit crammed though.

Also depending on the night try the Hifi Club or the Wardrobe.

If you dont want student nights on a saturday avoid;

Evolution, O2 Academy and any of the bars on the Otley run. And the Union...but I'm sure you wouldnt head there anyway!

Saturday and Friday will be pretty busy I should imagine, its last week of exams this week, so everyone and their mum will be out throughout the week. My last one is on Weds so that will be an interesting night.

Not all the places.

Good classy bars*:
Sky Lounge @ Mint Hotel. Nice bar on top of the hotel.
Living Room - older cliental, but good selection of drinks
Epernay - nice champagne/bottled beer bar in The Electric Press

Personally I'd hit Manchester. I could give you a very big list for there.
