If you use the A30 in North Hampshire between Hook and Camberley please can you help me.
Recently spray painted lines have appeared on the east bound side of the road at the end of the dual carriageway section between Hartley Wintney and Blackbushe. I have had it confirmed by Hampshire council that they are going to be re-marking the road at this point to end the dual carriageway earlier and force the traffic into one lane hugging the left hand side of the currently 2 lane road.

My issues with this are:
1) Why shorten the dual carriage way section at all? There have been ZERO accidents at this point in the road. It is just a waste of OUR money,
2) The restriction in the road is on a bend, at the top of a hill underneath over-hanging trees. The change will make the road more dangerous.
3) The change will put any cyclists on the road at greater risk as the cars, without entering into the painted 'reserved' area will not be able to safely pass. This is at a point where cyclists will be travelling slowly and there can be debris in the road from the trees.

Please can you email:

Roads@hants.gov.uk

expressing your deep concerns to the changes if you use this road at all.

Below is the email I sent if you wanted to cut & paste (though differently worded messages would probably have more impact).

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to you with regards to with regards to the A30 road between Hartley Wintney and Blackbushe airfield. Recently a sprayed white line has appeared on the east bound carriageway of the road at the west end of the dual carriage way section from Hartley Wintney to Blackbushe (OS Ref: SU 77857 58242). Such lines are normally an indication of planned works to be carried out on the road.

This line suggests there are works planned to the road at this point. My interpretation of the white line is that there is a plan to narrow the road at this point, either through re-painting the right hand white line hatched 'reserved' area of the carriageway or through road bollards.

If this is the case that I think this will create a severe accident risk on an otherwise perfectly safe stretch of road.

The section of road in question is the near the top of a hill and represents a point where any cyclist trying to use the A30 will be moving slowly. Restricting the width of road just as the dual carriageway is coming to an end, where the road curves right over the brow of the hill and where over hanging trees often leads to leaves and other debris to fall onto the road seems like a very foolish plan to me. Cars and lorries will be presented with a very narrow section of road in which to:

1) Drive a smooth safe line through the curve in the road
2) Avoid any fallen debris from the trees.
3) Avoid slow moving cyclists.

If the road is modified as the spray painted lines on the road suggests I for one will feel far less safe both driving up the A30, and cycling up it. I fear it will only be a matter of time until an accident occurs at an otherwise safe spot.

Please can you confirm what planned works are to be carried out at this point, and put my mind at rest that the road is not to be made more dangerous though some mis-placed scheme.

yours sincerely,

Don1

Boing back to the front page (for 30 nanoseconds) ...

Come on people... the only way we'll ever get the councils and highways people to stop and think about the changes they do to feck up our roads is to tell them we don't want them.... How long does it take to send off an email saying you think the changes being made to the A30 are unnecessary and dangerous...

Done.

I have to use the A30 to get to the office everyday. It's already a joke after they took some of the dual carriageway between Murrell Green, and Hartley Witney!

If this happens, It'll force me onto the M3.

GWMD... thank you... the council do seem to have some form of agenda to degrade all the dual carriageway sections of the A30. I'm pushing them to justify the change but getting ignored by them. But the more complaints they get the greater the chance of them having to respond/change the plans.

Ah, Posted your email to them, and then scrolled down and saw that it has already been resolved.

Never mind,
