OK, UK reggae, and I mean ‘proper’ reggae – so many to choose from:
Mad professor and Ariwa Records– 1982-’90 – I like the work he did with Ranking Ann
Papa Levi (Mi God Mi King being one of his best), Barrington Levi is good, with Here I come and Under Mi Sensi being classics, and sound as good today as they did almost 30 years ago
Horace Andy, Tippa irie, Daddy Colonel (with the Saxon Sound System)

Poetic reggae – Linton Kwesi Johnson

Jamaican reggae –Again so many to choose from, the best being Gregory Isaacs – beautiful music and voice (especially when backed by the Root Radics). Dennis Brown (The 12” for Money in my Pocket being a classic), Peter Tosh, Johnny Osbourne, to name just a few.

Dub Reggae – Scientist, King Tubby, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Mad professor, Sly and Robbie, Prince Jammy – these are the cream (most using the fantastic Roots Radics band too)

Dancehall reggae (MC) – Yellowman, Eek A Mouse, Clint Eastwood and General Saint, Lone Ranger, Ranking Dread, Mikey dread, Sister Nancy, Toyan, General Echo, Dr Alimantado, Don Carlos and Gold, Charlie Chaplin, Cutty Ranks, Beanie Man – the list is endless.

Other ‘shout outs’ go to Black Uhuru and Aswad (early Aswad – the ‘Live and Direct’ album is fantastic)

Most of the above are mid to late Seventies and early to late Eighties reggae, which is, in my very humble opinion, the best and most pure of reggae was produced (not so keen on early Trojan stuff..), before most of it went crap.

Oh yes, there is one song that I first heared on the John Peel show, by Natural Lites and the Realistics called Picture on the Wall, this is a great little song..

Lots of sub-genres within 'reggae', all with very distinct sounds and styles, some really inaccessible, but there's some good compliations out there.... The DJ Andy Smith Trojan set is a good place to start, which has some lovely old dancehall and ska tracks on it. Also have a listen to Horace Andy who has worked with loads of producers and other more mainstream acts over many years)he's pretty much the signature male voice of Massive Attack for instance).

Might be an idea to identify some tracks you like, then identify the style - ie is it Dub or is a Toasters' track (problem is many standards were re-recorded in many different styles according to the sound system they were destined to be played on...). Be warned, addictive once you get the taste for it
