If your choices range from a fking A3 to a 370Z, it seems the world is your lobster Rodney.

Come on, what are your parameters?

As above, many companies have guidelines as to what car you can choose from. Often, there is a set list with the usual rep mobiles - Astra, Insignia, Mondeo, etc.

In my previous job the company car HAD to;
be diesel
have 5 doors (no coupes, no saloons, hatchback only rolleyes)
Generally, it had to be worse than what the next level of managers were driving

Didn't leave much scope for anything interesting. The best I had was a 2.0 TDi Golf (140PS)

You might be fine with your selection, but double-check the company rules before you get your heart set on anything interesting.

Sound slike you have flexibility then!

Remember that the tax they will take from your pay packet is calculated on a combination of the CO2 and list price of the car.

So, an expensive car + high CO2 figure will mean you get bent over very quickly. There will be websites out there with company car tax calculators to give you a feel of it. Diesels will make sense unless you are on a massive wage.

I took up a job last year, with a company car, and to be fair, there was quite a lot to choose from,up to the Audi A5 sort of mark (that would include an employee contribution of £250 a month).I didn't want to spend much above the given allowance, and wanted something a bit fun and quick, so I ordered a new Polo GTI 180PS.

Its not very big or practical, but I've got to keep a car for 3 years, and good cars as they may be,I just don't think I could wake up looking forward to driving a mondeo/equivalent every day.

Get something you enjoy!

Bloke at work is a couple of years off retirement, has 'gone out with a bang' on what is likely to be his last company car...Jaguar XF 5.0 V8 (petrol). He's contributing to it as it is quite a bit over our allowance and on top of that I suspect his tax code has taken quite a hit! In his case it would have probably worked out cheaper to take the cash and lease privately but fair play for choosing a decent car, certainly stands out amongst the usual boring diesels.

Have a play on comcar. You can input different cars and your salary etc and it will tell you how much tax you will be paying.

If it were me and the choice was unlimited, I'd have an Elise. Decent economy and low ish co2 would make it very appealing!

If it's a company car, how come you're getting any pence per mile, let alone 'above average'?

Not all company car deals come with a fuel card. The PPM is a 'fuel only' rate in that case, its about 18p diesel/26p petrol instead of the full 45p.

So is it a car you get or a car allowance?
