Not really computers & stuff.. trouble is putting on General Gassing means it's knocked off 1st page in 5 mins flat.

Anyhow.. my aged landlady was very excited about a message left on her phone.. a prize win. She told me it was from BT. Well spoken chap, recorded chap expplained.. "you've won £800.. please confirm your details". Questions were age of mobile phone, interests etc etc. Not one mention of whom it was from though. The final request to claim this prize was to SMS full address followed by a 4 digit code, all formatted with neatly commas as per instructions.

"Allow 45 days for your prize to arrive"

Told her not to supply this final info (She's already done the 1st half with her landline phone)

What you reckon ? Smells of bad fish to me

alot of SMS places will happily charge you £5+ per message recieved, they only need to show that you messaged them, for their morals to be satisfied, before firing off a billion messages to you.

Be very weary.

If she has not entered a competition, then it's a scam.

It's *very* hard to get off a reverse SMS charge list once you're on it (a friend's daughter got on one by mistake).

And I'd be "weary", too...

I'd just like to point out that my remark was in a Blackadder stylee and not in any way a comment on Mrs. Fish

I'm just saying this to avoid a possible fish slap (ooh, a Monty Python reference!)

I've had this twice on my home phone today the end of the message requests that you call back on 09050 ****** (wrote the number down somewhere) as I was tempted to report it as I'm registered with TPS

Message is something about: Unclaimed bonus caller prize of £800, it is their second and final attempt to contact me and according to their T&C's the prize must be claimed by midnight tonight otherwise it will be allocated to another customer

Telephone Preference Service said:

The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) helps you to make sure your telephone number is no longer available to organisations who may telephone you with offers and information you do not wish to receive.

Under Government legislation introduced on 1 May 1999 it is unlawful to make unsolicited direct marketing calls to individuals who have indicated that they do not want to receive such calls.

You can either do this by contacting companies directly and asking them not to call you or you can register with a central register - the TPS.

I registered with them and the postal version too and it's been superb, I can't recall a single unsolicited call during the past few months.

since registering with TPS just about all cold-calling has stopped. A few that slip through strangely cut the conversation short when you mention that you are registered with the TPS!!

One thing to remember is that companies that you have given permission to contact you by phone can still contact you even if they are trying to sell you something new. Also, several companies get round it by glossing up their sales pitch as market research which is allowed.

However, still very much worth registering.
