Simply so the driver gets the clearest view of the mirror from where he's sitting. I think especially cars with quarter lights tended to have assymetrical mirrors so the driver had a clear sight line to the mirror.
It's difficult to spot on a 964 unless you know about it. The Merc 190 was a LOT more noticeable...

For aerodynamic reason the side mirrors should be as close as possible to the A-post (as per driver's side mirror).
However the passenger side mirror is offset to do with the fact that if it was in the same place you wouldn't from the drivers seat.
On the 959 they originally just deleted the passenger mirror to cope with that fact.

Your post said that they were offset for aero reasons? Thats why I asked as it is obviously for practical reasons. However the passenger side mirror is offset to do with the fact that if it was in the same place you wouldn't from the drivers seat.

Indeed mirror was moved back to facilitate rear view BUT for aero reason they decided to only move one...would actually have looked better with both mirrors to keep it symetrical: but worse aero
Apologies if I am being pedantic here, but how would moving the drivers mirror back a couple of inches make the aero worse? Surely it would be better to have both sides symetrical for aero? Do you have a link to the source of this info?Edited by 911Thrasher on Sunday 15th January 15:07
