Buying a guitar.....

I don't play but have wanted to learn for years, got my eye on either a Yamaha F310 or a Fender Squier SA-105...any others I should look at in that sector?

Bought my first guitar 2 weeks ago. The advice I got was to buy the guitar you want to play because then you'll probably pick it up play it more.
If/when you start to feel slightly less incompetent you could think about changing it based on your now acquired skills.
I bought a Les Paul copy and have been picking it up almost every day although I still sound bloody awful and my fingers hurt.

Go for the Yamaha. Their quality is unmatched at that price point.

Suggest an acoustic, electrics tend not to sound nice as a solo instrument unless your good.

With an acoustic you can play anywhere and learn different styles instead of bashing out power chords, the solos that you hear by the rock gods take years to sound okay and then you need all the effect boxes and amps which are extra expense,

as Martyn said - get an acoustic (steel strung not the godawful nylon ones) and pluck away to your heart's content. I would also strongly advise one or 2 intro lessons to get you into good habits and give you some stuff to learn.

I started learning on an electric, played for a year or so and kinda got stuck in a rut. Then I bought an acoustic and to be honest i've probably learnt a lot more on the acoustic than I have on the electric. You'll also build up more strength in your fretting hand on an acoustic, so i'd say go for an acoustic first.

best tip when buying a guitar is try as many as possible in your spec and price range. Music shops are usually really good about this and will let you just waft through their stock.
Whatever you do don't pick out a nice model and just buy it. try try try try before you buy!

When I got my last one I went into the shop with one model in mind and came out with something completely different. I found what I wanted (epi sg) was just completely uncomfortable and didn't suit me at all.

The decision to buy acoustic over eletric was made weeks/months ago ...just need to get the right one.

You won't go far wrong with a Yamaha, but as others mentioned, buy the one that feels best in your hands - that really is the best guitar on the market.

What about a vintage they do les paul/tele/stratocaster sg copies and get very good reviews.

I can recommend yamaha - the apx series costs from £250 upwards and they look good, sound great, and are easy for a newcomer to master. They also have a piezo pickup in them so you can still plug it into an amp. I've had my one for years and its still going strong

I had a Yamaha acoustic. About £120 worth. You could throw it down the stairs, smash it to pieces and set it on fire then when you pulled the strings from its cold, dead corpse they'd still be magically in tune.

Didn't survive Milan-Retford in the back of a Luton though.
Have a Westfield now.
