What were your 2001 test drives then and your scores ? Either at a dealer or trying a mates car etc...


Mine as follows, scores relative to my expectations for that particular type of car and if it delivered at the given pricepoint and hype/reputation (rather than relative to eachother).

Fiat Punto diesel 1 out of 10 (horrendous gearchange!)

Not many but a new 1.8 tdci(?) 6 speed Mondeo which cruises very well on the motorway when up to speed.

2x Focus 1.8tdci 5 speeds which are impossible to move off without kangarooing due to the stupid antistall on them.

Megane Coupe 2/10 No head room and crap suspension.
88 Inch Series II Land Rover 4/10 No leg room or seat adjustment.
MG tF 4/10 was great before it broke down to total electrical failure.
Alfa 159 Q4 9/10 Q4 diff' left the car feeling a bit too neutral.
BMW X1 3/10 about the same size but gutless compared to the 525 iX I used to have Little to no off road ability as well.
Panda 100bhp 6/10 Absolute hoot pity it's a five door.

In my case, scores relative to my expectations for that particular type of car in terms of performance considering "per £" of tax, MPG and comfort (given 30000miles a year). I.e. I'm not saying a 135i is only 'as good' as a C250 automatic!

Insignia was terrible to drive and terrible on fuel. 4 cyl diesels all noisy. 330d would have been a strong contender but nobody had a demo in time and plus BMW stopped taking orders for the E90 in September.

Ended up with the C250. A little noisy, a bit gutless, not quite as good to drive as the BMW but overall the best 'deal'.
