South Yorkshire camera partnership
Discussion
Just had an annoying newspaper through from Barnsley Police with an article on how many lives speed cameras are saving in the area so I'm formulating a reply how does this sound:
I have just recieved the latest copy of Serving You for Barnsley. It contains an interesting article on the effect of speed cameras, namely that lives are saved by them.
From your site I note that in 2002 the were 70 killed on Barnsleys' road, from the Dft site I note that 65 were killed on Barnsleys' roads in 2003. I would be interested to know the drop in the number of killed specifically at camera sites. How does this compare to an 'average' year and not just the abnormal ones when the cameras placement figures were achieved?
I also note from the same sites that in 2002 KSI figures were 579 (70 killed + 509 seriously injured), and in 2003 KSI were 743 (65 killed + 683 seriously injured). Although the South Yorkshire Safety Camera Partnership may have a drop of 35% drop in KSI's at camera sites, on South Yorkshires roads as a whole you have a rise of 29% in KSI's. Are you not responsible for the whole of South Yorkshires' roads? Is a 29% rise in KSI's not a failure in what you were set up to achieve or are you only responsible were you put cameras?
I must say that 70 cameras in the area and the KSI's have risen by an astonishing 169 is quite an achievement

"Thank you for your implied support for our policy of installing safety cameras to cut KSIs on our roads. We will certainly be installing cameras where the KSIs have risen in this period over the previous period. This will enable us to achieve reductions in KSIs across all our roads. Eventually we will have reduced KSIs to zero by the implementation of safety cameras on every road.
Mind you, what will we do then? Why, it's simple ... we'll implement more bus lanes and bus lane cameras, no right/left turn cameras, HOV lane cameras, ... . Don't worry, we can still be inventive in our ways to remove cash from your pockets."

Find out how many were killed in S Yorks over the past 10 years (when there were speed cameras - find out when they started installing them) or so. Bet it hasn't changed significantly at all. Compare that to the change over the previous 20 years. I bet that period showed a massive fall in deaths - when policing was done by the police instead of by robots.
