Hi All,

My 1st car has a private registration plate which I would like to transfer to my 2nd car. Both cars have a MOT, are taxed and insured. I have the V5 from my 1st car but only the new keeper part of the V5 for the 2nd car. I bought the 2nd car on the weekend.

Is it possible to transfer the private plate in a day at my local DVLA office? Or as the DVLA website suggests, it'll take upto 2 weeks?

Thanks

I've had it done in a day at the Wimbledon DVLA office (it was about 5 years ago and I still had to wait for the V5 in the post)

they dont/wont do it in the local offices anymore, they take the paperwork and send it back to you, you may as well just post it.

They won't do it straight away. I had one done in November at my local DVLA office and it took a week for the paperwork to come through. You are not allowed to change the numbers until all paperwork is sent to you

They take the paperwork, take two copies, keep one themselves, send one to DVLA and give you the originals just in case they get lost (maybe it varies by local office)
As the OP still has the first car it should go smoothly. They may be able to issue new disc etc on the spot - the only delay is the arrival of the new V5 from DVLA HQ
Worth a go and post up what happens yes

How about from retention to a car? I was under the impression that this was still possible?

Not usually but they will sometimes apply a retained reg over the counter.
