Every time it's a cold morning the local Police tweet the numbers stolen while defrosting.

4 today. It's depressing. For the sake of a few minutes sat in the car with a cup of hot tea, they prefer to leave the car unattended.

This is stupid on the owners part however it is a sad state of affairs that we expect someone to drive off with our cars if left running for a couple of minutes.

Walked past two cars in less than a mile on my way to the station that were left to defrost unattended. I don't know how some people can leave a car like that without thinking/ worrying off how easily it could disappear if someone scrote-y went by.

Ps, to the owner of the 56 plate A4, I left it at the station with the engine running for you

They only do it once.

My personal preference is a mains powered ceramic PTC heater, run it out to the car from the garage, leave it on the central arm rest for 10 minutes, have a cup of tea, come back to a clear windscreen and warm seats/steering wheel.... Then watch neighbour crack the screen of his new Golf by pouring boiling water down it

Someone needs to come up with an after market bypass kit so you can start the engine and the heater using the remote while keeping the door locked

Did Merc put a "thermos" in the car (S Class). So you can set the time it should warm the cabin for you to use the next day.

Range Rover; push button on key fob marked "heat" from comfort of own home. Get in nice warm car in 10mins

Alas I don't have a range rover!

This is the advantage of an electric key.

Push it halfway in, so the car will start but not latch onto the key (stops you removing the key)

then lock the car.

make a coffee.

Return 20 mins later to a nice warmish defrostedish car.

It's a factory fit option on Range Rovers iirc, and remote engine starters have been on the Max Power scene for years ('cos thery're cool!!!11). Not legal to have a car running when unattended on public roads in the UK though, so you need a driveway/ garage to stay legal.

Remote control heating is an option on most mid- to top-end cars sold in Germany. You can switch it on and off with an iphone app on the newest BMWs.

This came as standard in my BMW. I can start the car, remove key, then lock the doors.

Me - hat gloves luke warm kettle to deice it and off to work still in the hat and gloves while everyone else is scraping at their frozen cars with the engine running and the heat up to the max.
