Old N64 console through AV

Having a few issues getting a N64 working properly through the setup I have.
Connecting it straight to the TV through the separate composite leads works fine.
But I want to connect it through our AV (Onkyo 607) for ease of use.
When I try this I get a screen that flashes on for a few seconds before moving on the screen then going blank. The sound stays on all the time.
Am I doing something simple wrong? Perhaps there is a setting I need to change on the AV?
Or maybe older consoles just won't work when going back through HDMI or something like that?
