Getting around an engine immobiliser - 1997 106xn
Discussion
last week the immobiliser in my car decided it had had enough, and refused to let the engine start.
the local garage said it'll cost £150 - £300 to sort out as it needs a special technician to come out and fit a new immobiliser and maybe a new.. the other thing. control box or something?
is there no way to bypass the immobiliser without throwing lots of money at it?
car is a 1997 pug 106xn 1.1 petrol.
thanks,
Tom

You can have it taken out if you wanted to.the local garage said it'll cost £150 - £300 to sort out as it needs a special technician to come out and fit a new immobiliser and maybe a new.. the other thing. control box or something?

Control box may have been referring to a new ECU maybe? Either way, my dad had this problem with his 106 1.5 diesel, to get around I replaced the ECU from an older 106 1.5 diesel that didn't have an immobiliser, so the system which is the ECU when started up for the first time with my dads engine, it didn't even think to prime an immboliser, and as soon as it started I simply disconnected the keypad in case of any future mishaps, but I still left the keypad on display in its correct position just to maybe deter thieves...
I tried literally everything else before doing that which a friend who works at Peugeot recommended to me.

apparently this only works once you have got the car started. The garage reckon there is no easy way to get around it to get the car started in the first place

this is the sort of workaround i was hoping they could do, but i guess this would take a bit of lateral thinking on their part, which i get the impression they cant be bothered with if it wont make them much money.Edited by deadtom on Tuesday 17th January 11:59

Yeah if its not going to make them much money I doubt they would be interested in doing that, half the reason I got into the automotive trade as a paintsprayer was to save myself being ripped off by manufacturers!Edited by deadtom on Tuesday 17th January 11:59
I cant think of any other routes to take really except that one, hopefully someone more knowledgeable with Peugeots may be able to help!
Try a Peugeot specialist forum. Maybe someone on here can help.

check the connections on the ariel, the ring that sits round the igntion barrel,
on a 106 1.1 i had, there was a tiny break in it, so i had to unwind it all, then start again and re solder it!
also, check the relays, the one i had would refuse to start, and i spent all day on it, refering to autodate, checking ECU connections etc
turns out it was a loose connection on the starter relay behind the glovebox!
so try that before you go throwing loads of money at it!

thanks for the replies.
I guess it probably is possible to get around the immobiliser and bodge it if you know what you're doing, and have the time to do it, but im not sure the garage in question would take kindly to me hanging around there for a few hours trying to sort it myself so that i dont have to give them any money

106 with keypad doesn't have a transponder on the ignition barrel.Get yourself another ECU from a scrappy for a few quid. Stick it in, enter the code on the keypad and when the engine is running, pull the plug off the back of the keypad. You'll have no more immobiliser problems.
What are the numbers on the ECU ? - I have an immobiliser free one in the garage I bought when I had issue with one of my kids 106, R plate car. Plug it in and starts with no need to enter the numbers. It wasn't an ECU problem in my case so I refitted the original.

You can have the one I have for a small contribution.

Hi there, I also have a 1.5 diesel i have completely forgotten the code, I understand i can either remove the stop solenoid and change foe standard but that means smashing all the casing off, i also understand that i can swap out the ecu for a non coded one, but have a few questions....
1 do the other ecus not use transponder key coding if no keypad?
2 where is the ecu loacted to swap out
3 does it not need to be same numbered or just same car as i have another 1.5 diesel without the keypad
i also know if you get the code in and start the engine you can unplug the keypad and never needs it again but ive read people saying swap ecu get it started then unplug keypad and swap back ecu but surely the code is in the ecu and therefore when you put the old one back in it has not seen the engine run and keypad disconnection so will require the code???
Very confused.
Anyone shed any light
