I bought a few games amongst other things for GFs son for Xmas.

Now, I don't read gaming magazines, but I used to. And someone was always talking about metal gear.

I've never played metal gear but over the years, it did seem to crop up an awful lot. The only time I saw it was watching a best mate play it through, on the 8 bit NES more than 20 years ago.

I noted that the series grew in popularity, I presumed it warmed hearts as it was forever being talked about, but I never played it.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure it was voted best game ever somewhere (gamespot?) and on the strength of it's still high and current popularity, I bought it for GF's son.

He doesn't play it. He apologetically suggested it wasn't any good. And I'm not willing to confront him, it's his choice to play it, or not. It's a non issue really as everyone is happy, but I do wonder how - when sure I was buying him a great game - I could buy something which was discarded immediately.

This is why I don't shop for women, without another woman or two on hand! biggrin

Why would you like it, or what might make you dislike it so strongly? I'm just curious.

People like different things. I for one hate Halo and cannot stand Gears of War. Both have a huge following and great reviews and I have never liked a single one of them. Consoles have been sold just to get those games and I never understand.

I agree with Dan, while it might be a superb game with an enormous following (Is it a PS3 only game?) some people, like me, just can't get on with certain types of game. I for one hate first person shooters like Battlefield or Modern Warfare but I can play third person shooters like Gears, even better are games that heavily feature cars then I'm set. Find out what the lad is into and choose a game based on that, gamers are almost as discerning as film buffs hehe

I hear you. We all prefer different things. But a slow paced chilled out voted best game ever type experience? I'm not into racing games. In fact I hate them. But if you force a good one upon me, I'll let it become my new best friend.

If he had a library of nineteen hundred games, I wouldn't bat an eyelid. He doesnt. Which is why I gave him 3 games. Red dead grand theft horse, and the others I mentioned.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not upset in the least. Just curious.

I can probably shed some light on it for you, Although I am biased as the Metal Gear Series is my favourite.

I've completed them all more times than I'd wish to count, Obtaining all different titles etc. And have just purchased the HD Collection on PS3 so that I can go through and get all the trophies available with better graphics.

My Cousins lad came over the other week and was looking through my games. He noted MGS and wanted to see what all the hype was about. I put him on MGS2 so that at least it was quite pretty to look at(Even though MGS1 is the daddy)

He ran straight into everything as though it was Call of Duty, Shooting everything in sight and declared the game was crap. I tried to explain that he was playing it wrong, The whole idea was to sneak past and hide the bodies of people you had to kill etc. He didn't get it.

In summary, I think it is probably half because of people wanting to play quick-Twitch shooters these days. And half because I probably have rose tinted glasses to MG and MGS1 from the 90s. I can still quite happily play through either of these.

I like the mgs series but I'm no fanboy. I really enjoy the sneaking but find the story so bizarre it puts me right off. The Japanese are weird enough but the stories are like they're on an acid trip.

I might be wrong but I think MGS appeals to the older generation of gamers, kids these days just like fast action games where they dont really have to try to actually achieve anything, if the game is too hard for them they just declare the game broken and crap and move on.

MGS is a funny game to class. It is very cinematic and as stated before it can be a little odd at times. I for one have only played MGS 1 and 2. I could not stand the character in 2 (Raiden was it?). White haired girly bonce. Yet in Japan that would be "Cool".

Also add to the fact you have no hope running and blasting stuff as you will be dead/caught/spotted etc means some people cannot get a blast fix.

I'm another lover of the MGS games, the story in each game has more twists and turns than an entire series of 24, provided you can keep track of it. My personal favourite is MGS3: Snake Eater as it has one of the greatest and most memorable boss battles of all time; stealthily making your way around to defeat The End, an ageing sniper who falls asleep if left long enough and will even die of old age if you turn the game off and leave it for a few days.

There are little touches of genius that shine through in each game, objectively they aren't the greatest, having some fiddly controls, but who can deny being amazed when one of the characters reads your mind (memory card) and is unbeatable until you realise you need to plug your controller into the second slot to fool him. Then there's the time you're told to read the radio frequency off the CD box, so you spend half an hour searching the game environment for this box, scratching your head the whole time, then have a moment of clarity and realise that it's hidden in plain sight on the reverse of the actual game case. Tossing soft-core porno mags around (that you can read yourself) in order to distract guards, these are all little moments that add up into a series that really is less about the game mechanics and more about how you use what is available to you in order to succeed.

You've gotta pe quite patient to play MGS games. Most people can't be bothered to wait in a cardboard box for a few minutes until they've figured out a good way to get round an obstacle.
Another thing with metal gear is that you won't be very efficient on the first playthrough of the game, to get good and really enjoy MGS you need to give it a few playthroughs which is fine because you can play the game in loads of different ways.

Nowadays, single player games only last a few hours/days, online multiplayer is where its at which doesn't really suit MGS unless they managed to put a co-op mode in which would be ace.

I reckon MGS4 is one of, if not the best game ever made but I still find it really hard to enjoy it because I haven't got the time to get good at it and prefer playing online multiplayer fifa.

I played the online deathmatches unfortunately. Like a really poor Gears of War.
I haven't missed an online co-op mode have I???
I'd probably go out and get a ps3 just for that.

I've played a few of them and always hated them. I find them slow and frustrating and ultimately boring. Sneaking about hiding in a carboard box, sitting for ages waiting for a guard to walk away - I last, at best, 10 mins before I blow someones head off in view of all his mates.

Oddly I love the Hitman games, but it did take me a while to realise you got more point by NOT leaving the level completely devoid of life, but at least with that, at the point you feck up and the guards come running you can break out the dual pistols and start blowing away the fkers.

You can do that in MGS too once you get used to the controls, one of the funy things about MGS is that it gives you a massive arsenal of cool weapons then discourages you from using almost all of them for the entire game.

I love the whole series.
I still think that the first PS version was the best for fun, cleverness and originality.
At the time the graphics and art style were incredible.
The PS3 game was different but very good.

I think there was a trophy for completing mgs4 without killing anyone.

I bought one (MGS4 I think...) and played it for a few days, decided it wasn't my thing and haven't been back since. There are some types of game that just don't interest people, like I don't really like the Uncharted series. However, I do like racing games and shooting games, but I don't like NFS:Shift and I don't like Killzone or MAG. It's becoming quite specific, people are sticking more to series that they know they like, or occasionally branching out if they hear good things from their mates, like with Skyrim.

I used to buy games every month or two, play them for a while then want something completely new. Nowadays, I only play 2 or 3 games on a regular basis, but don't buy new games anywhere near as often, maybe only one or two per year. I only really buy the new games in a series I kow I like, like COD, Gran Turismo, GTA, Midnight Club etc etc. The gaming industry has moved in this direction in general, spending a lot more on popular series rather than spreading money around into all sorts.

i got mgs 4 or something having played them on the ps1 before. I spent five minutes with it then went fk that.

I really like the sneaking about and problem solving in the games i played before but this is just too hard for the bad weather gamer like myself.

gives you little help to start and all the stories building up to playing it are sheer pish, i bought the game to play it not listen to tripe.
