For a £5k budget I can pick up ethier a 2.0JTS or 1.9JTD with various mileages, with the diesel having a better selection to choose from.
Would I really damamge the engine only doing short journeys and limited mileage in the diesel. I know i wouldn't see the benefits in terms of MPG, but i like the thought of more torque and the potential to chip the car to get more BHP. Plus most reviews reckon the diesel is the most suitable engine in these.
I have read doing short journeys in diesel cars can really damage the car, as you dont give it a chance to warm up properly. Is that right on the Alfa?

I'd go diesel if the 3.2 isn't in the equation. The 1.9 JTD in the GT never had a DPF so short journeys not a major problem and as you say the car can be sensibly remapped. Plus point of going for the JTS however is that you should get a newer car with fewer miles (hmm got me thinking now!), best thing is try one of each and see which you prefer.
I used mine (which I traded in today) for the last 18 months doing b-road blasts to work - 5 miles each way. As such, I only put about 10k miles on it in that time.
Mine's the diesel, and it caused no harm at all. I did a little bit of motorway once a week, but only for a few miles.
I would say go for the diesel. I was averaging 40 mpg from small runs with a heavy foot, and on a long run it was getting mid to high 40's. Plus it's cheap to tax. The engine actually suits the car; i promised i'd get it remapped before I finally bought it, but it really doesn't need it. Hence I didn't bother.
Great car. Just got a 159 1.9 as new baby needs space!
