Hi all

My good lady and I are looking to embark on a wee jaunt across the continent this summer, we've bought a nice little cheap convertible for the job (mk 2 mx5 - ok a little bland for some but she drives nice and should get us there and back). Anyway, we've got ourselves a map and a few books, but I thought you can't beat other people's experiences as a starting point for ideas. Basically we need to be able to get from home in Manchester, probably start Hull-Rotterdam, and then come back Calais - Dover about 10 days later, but at the moment the bit in the middle is a blank canvas.. so let's hear some experiences.. bear in mind we are doing it on a reasonable budget as we are poor(ish), hence mx-5 not the Aston..

Cheers

Our little Liege-Targa-Liege jaunt back in '99 was one to remember. It took us ~12 days iirc, but that was using a lot of back roads and instead you could head straight down through France and miss out Belgium altogether, so should be easily done in 10 days.

Some of the places we took in en route to Sicily and back included Monte Carlo, Monte Cassino, Montbeliard, Cortina D'Amprezzo, Mt Etna, Scalea, Venice, the Stelvio pass and on through the Dolomites (stunning), and the Schlumf collection at Mulhouse.

The couple laps around the old Targa Florio circuit really hit home why it was such a fabled race. That many turns and corners, despite such a long straight really make you work the car. At race speeds it must have been something else entirely. Sadly the road surface has deteriorated in places, and the need to avoid grazing sheep is a newer feature, but it's still a location that everyone should visit and drive at some point in their lives - knowing that you're following the same roads that the likes of Fangio/Moss/Hill did.

Many photos from the trip courtesy of Chris Armstrong to whet your appetite at http://www.pistonenvy.com/westfieldpics/targa/lieg...

There's even one of me (on the left) woohoo
