Don't know if this is old news. But it's looking good.

I'm not sure I believe the manual-only talk.... I reckon PDK. That's the way the markets been going for a while, and Porsche have been investing a lot in developing and promoting it. Ferrari don't do manual anymore, I see no reason why Porsche should feel compelled to deliver a manual-only GT3. Will definitely be interesting to see what transmission will eventually be bestowed on the 991 GT3!

PDK and option of manual (after test drive in both) would clarify if manual is indeed out of date for high performance cars. I think it is.I actually hope that it is manual only. There's simply tons of choice for lovers of DCTs. If you really want a DCT there's a wonderful 991 C2S available that's been optimised for PDK and is as fast as a GT3. But Porsche to me has always been a little idiosyncratic, so it would be in keeping with their bloody-minded heritage to say the 991 GT3 is for lovers of the manual shift and meant to be more challenging to drive. I'd hate for them to go down the route of the C2S, where the manual gearbox looks very much like an afterthought!

Can't believe it's only 40kg lighter then the normal 991 with no rear seats! Granted the 991 is lighter than the previous model. Just fill the car up with half a tank. They will no doubt lower the weight further with the 991GT3RS.

996 GT3 was actually heavier than the Carrera! Koing

New 981 has a 6 speed manual, so hopefully the GT3 will get a 6 speeder not an afterthought! Like you I think they'll offer both but I'd love them to offer 6 speed manual only. If they did go down the clutchless route, a sequential race gearbox would be acceptable to me but I think that's less likely than PDK.fioran0 said:
What's the engine.
IMHO every other single question relating to the new car, and I mean every single one, is insignificant in comparison.
If you are asking will it be the Mezger block, I think the answer is no, that engine is finished. It will be a breathed on version of the current DFI.IMHO every other single question relating to the new car, and I mean every single one, is insignificant in comparison.

You know, I dont actually think it is. The holinger box in my 997cup was offensive and the engine was still great as was the car. The engine and the car itself are critical. Ignoring the fact that PDK apparently cannot physically fit the current engine I'm sure with the right ratios it would actually be just fine.

I have been shot down many times for suggesting this, but I just have a gut feeling that they are considering fitting a special road version of one. And to those who say it cannot be done I say PAH! We've been to the moon, Im sure a sequential box can be designed for the road.MTR

This was not what I was asking. MTR
The new engine has to be able to race and specifically endurance race. If the Cup engines are sufficiently different in fundamentals then there's no credibility left for the new GT3 no matter how it's played. It will still sell I'm sure but it loses what ensures its regard.
All the Cup and RSR customers are waiting to see what comes next. This is the legacy of killing the current engine. If the new unit is junk folks will race other marques so the gamble is great. I've not heard one person amongst my fellow cup owners cry over the end of the mezger, there's a decent number of voices been actively asking for a replacement for a while now, but everyone is watching to see what comes next on a technical level that's for sure.
My personal view is that im fine with it being replaced providing what comes next is good enough.
Given how long they have been flogging this unit in various guises though I do wonder if they have it in them anymore.
Can a breathed upon 9A1 cut it, how much breath are we talking about, will this be what's even delivered.
Will the street and race engines begin to seriously diverge.
It's these questions that are at the heart of the new car IMHO.
It's curious that almost all chatter is concerning what transmission or wing is fitted.
