Just thinking of (reluctantly) changing the car as I'm looking to move and may need to free up some cash. I've always found changing cars second only to moving house for hassle, may be just me but past dealings with dealers in particular have always been terrible -no matter how thoroughly I check and do my research.

My last car change was against this bad run of luck however, I had a 2002 S3 and was a member on an Audi forum. I got chatting to a guy who was on the lookout for an S3 with similar spec and price, before I knew it we had a agreed a price after me sending him pics and speaking over the phone regarding service history. We arranged to meet 2 days later(I live in Cornwall and him in Surrey), and I suddenly I thought bugger I need a car asap to move onto!

I had been trawling the classifieds for ages for an S4 V8 and could fine nothing to my liking, within my price range and reasonably close by. The day before I was going to meet the guy I found an S4 on Autotrader which had been there for only 30mins! I called the guy, liked what he had to say to questions asked and drove up at 5am next morning to meet him -just around the corner from the guy who i had arranged to meet to purchase mine!
We agreed a price on the S4 after checking her over and a test drive, then met the buyer of my S3 30mins later. After a test drive he handed over the cash and dropped me off to pick up the S4. After a short trip to Lloyds for a bankers draft to top up funds, i was driving back to Cornwall with my new pride and joy just 3 hours after arriving in Surrey!

I was interested to hear if anyone else had any other quick sale and purchase stories, where the Gods had clearly been shining down on them to assist in what can be a difficult and long winded operation?????!!!!!

Selling my old Civic was unexpectedly easy. I thought it would be a pain/ hassle to sell, as being young, I had modified it somewhat, and expected a never ending stream of mouth breathers bothering me.

Put adverts up on PH, Autoweb, and Gumtree (all free ads basically), and the car was sold withing 3 days to the first person that came to view it. The buyers (dad and his 19 year old son) came to view the car in the dark, and didn't even test drive it. Came back a couple of hours later with the readies, documents signed, and off they went. Car didn't cost me a thing in advertising, and the viewing and sales took an hour max.

Phoned a dealer whom I saw had the next car I wanted, put a deposit down over the phone, and three days later went down to view it. It was as described, I payed the agreed price, and drove home. Easy biggrin

I have been fairly lucky so far - my Astra was knackered and I didn't want to go spending a fortune on it, so I took it to a used car salesman and asked for a trade in value expecting it to be pennies. He took one look at it, commented on how clean it was, and offered me £50 less than I paid for it the year before!

The Mondeo was up for sale for ages with a couple of timewasters, until a guy from Skye phoned up one afternoon and offered top money for it. 2 hours later the car was gone!

Not even going to try and sell the current one - no one wants a family car with a V6 these days. Plus I like it, and it ma be worth something in a few years to come hehe

My DC5 was up on Gumtree for 3 weeks before somebody contacted me. Phone call at 9.30pm, they arrived at my work at 5pm the next day. I drove them around for 20 minutes and they handed me a lovely big wad of notes. I still have the spare wheel and jack here, actually. Must do something about that!

Next day it was delivered to my work with 12 months tax and MOT

Gave him a lift to the train station

The biggest hassle was getting the wife to drop me off at work

I sold my TVR 350I in November, which I thought would be hassle, especially approaching winter.

It went on PH at around 7:30pm one monday, had a phone call at around 9:30, had a deposit the next day and it was gone that weekend!

The chap who bought it was browsing the Wedges section of the cars for sale just as I posted my advert.

Stuck a post up here on a Tues or Wednesday asking if anyone had a particular car.

Got an email from a chap and had a good long chat that night. Agreed a price in principle (the price was agreed in less than a minute - both of us were reasonable and sensible) and transferred half the money directly into his account the next day.

Picked the car up the following evening.

That's easy

Put the details of my Sportage into the wewillbuyyourcar website last Tuesday & came up with a price

Some dude turned up on Friday, went over the car, called it into their office to say it was okay and they transferred the money straight into my bank account.

Plus, i got more than i was planning on selling it privately for.

This could end up sounding like an ad, but honestly - why sell privately when people like this will take it off your hands with no hassle, tyre kickers or dodgy scam artists.

Although, i guess you have to own a car they actually want!

In the darkest hours of my depression in trying to sell a car in the new year I think about putting the Skylines reg into WBAC to steel my resolve about talking to dealers to be low balled.

Put my old P Reg jag xj6 on autotrader online a few years ago for 2400, had call few hours after the add went live, he asked one question is it the same as the pictures and wanted to see it next day. When he came had one look round did not sit in it or check anying and said "what was it 2400" pulled cash out of his coat and handed it over and I did the paperwork... If Carlsberg did car sales...

WBAC were offering a grand less - and that's before you have to take it down there and have £50 knocked per scratch / paint chip. Then there's the admin fee on top - they can fk right off.

Go to car auction, pick car, bid, pay money, go home.

Go to car auction, register car for sale, someone bids, buys car, collect your money, go home.

When I sold my DC2, I asked on the forum for a rough valuation. Someone PM'd me. I gave him my price. He flew up a couple of days later, and bought it on the spot for the asking price.

My Eunos RS Limited was the easiest. I just said I was thinking of selling, someone local PM'd me, was here less than 2 hours later, and bought it on the spot. Both very, very easy transactions. If only they were all that easy.

I also swapped my E36 328 with a PHer for an MR2 Turbo. Very easy transaction too, but in hindsight, I don't think I should of, as my 36 was in much better condition than the '2. But my heart won out in the end. Solid it later for rather less than I would have valued the 328 at.

The BM probably.

Saw it on-line, rang the dealer in Leicester. Placed deposit, given good price in p/x for the Astra, the sales guy drove the BM down and picked up the Astra (and crashed it on the way home!!!). Quick money transfer, all done.

The Cali took a bit more effort as the dealer offered a pants p/x price for the Defender. But sold it for £2k more to a local dealer, flew up to Manchester, got taken to Preston, paid the full amount (minus £500 deposit) on a debit card. Nearly £45k on a debit card!! I seriously did not believe the bank lady when she told me you can spend £50k in one go on it!!!
