Looking to get a diesel estate car for some european touring with the odd sleep in the back if I had too. I'm 6'2'' so its got to be a decent size !

Really has to be a diesel (pref a turbo) as I really need 50-60mpg rather than 40).

I like the idea of a Volvo estate as they just seem to be cool, older Mercedes seeem to be rusty, BMW to expensive. End of the day it needs to be reliable/economical/comfortable.

Can't think of a Volvo or Mercedes that will deliver that economy for that budget. My suggestion would be a 1.9TDI Skoda Octavia or Passat.

B5 Passat/A4 is what you need, with the older non PD lumps, my FIL has a Passat 110 TDi and it does near 50mpg in town

You could get a SAAB 9-5 Estate - don't know if the 2.2 TiD is any good, heard some stories - also don't know if you'll get 50+mpg out of it!

As above a Passat TDi 110bhp seems to fit the bill, although hardly a drivers machine it is comfy/reliable etc...

Neither the Omega, Volvo nor the MG-ZT are going to be frugal enough to acheive 50MPG+

Beautiful, but like the Volvos, too thirsty? Would a Mondeo get the figures? I've always been pretty impressed with Mondeos despite their uninspiring image.

I got 51mpg over a tank last time I used if for a 'tour', according to the trip computer. Okay they aren't accurate, but the car was choc full of stuff and people and I was cruising at a steady 0.9 leptons most of the time. I've no doubt an actual calculated 50MPG would be easily acheivable. However one must consider injector and fuel pump troubles and DMF failure (all of which I am thankfully yet to suffer).

Citroen C5 HDI?

Absolutely massive estate and comfy ride. Load it to the gunwales and the suspension levels itself.

As said Octavia or a late 406 HDi 110. Both are loved as taxis so you know it would do the job.
