LOL - at the moment it's simply two sheets of Burr Walnut veneer sat under the table that my projector sits on (and one 0.2mm sheet of carbon fibre)...

...haven't actually done the dash yet as I haven't got round to removing it. biggrin

For what it is worth I have noticed that the grain on Chim wooden dash usually runs from base to top of dash panel.

I have just done mine in American Walnut Burr. I then used a Deep Mahogany wood dye and finished it with a French Polish and Linseed Oil.I was trying to keep it looking as close to original as possible.

Hi, I glued the veneer following the process as described on the RV8R website,
Once glued and the dials cut out I first of all sanded the veneer using a very fine paper, then cleaned it using white spirit after that I used "Colron" deep mahogany coloured wood dye approx £4 from B&Q and once that had dried I decided not to varnish it as I thought I would not be able to keep the dust off while it dried, so instead I used "Colron french polish" approx £8 from B&Q and Linseed Oil approx £4 from B&Q. Its quite easy to apply using cotton wool wrapped in lint free cloth rub the polish on first then when it starts getting tacky rub with a small amount of linseed oil then more polish and just keep going over and over it about 15 to 20 times then leave to dry it does dry hard and gives a great finish.
I did the whole thing on an evening over the course of a week its not that difficult just take your time when gluing the veneer on its feels a bit like trying to flatten a crisp.
I think the French polish gives a great finish and really brings out the wood without the difficulty of painting or spraying on a varnish and trying to keep the dust off

No I didnt use varnish

You can try the different finishes on your offcuts of veneer before you commit,
Like I said I was trying to get as close to original as possible

Cheers

This is my dash.
I stuck a piece of Model aircraft 0.7mm ply to the metal plate using Gorilla glue. Then stuck the Burr Walnut veneer to that using wood glue.
Cut the holes and used Rustins Plastic Coating.
Not the best picture in the world.

Well done both of you, those dashboards look really great. I was going to spray mine in body colour but after seeing these pics. I'm back on the veneer route now.

Jon, what glue did you use to stick the veneer to the metal dash panel, did you use Gorilla glue as well?
