Has anyone ever heard of the handbrake slipping on a S2

Probably just the cable needs adjusting a bit. When you say slipping you mean the car won't stay still on a hill in neutral, right??

Did you perhaps park it after a nice blast with lots of brake-action?

What can happen is that the brakes are hot when you put the car away. As they cool the discs shrink just a tiny bit and the handbrake now loses grip on the disc.

Result.. Car rolls away...

Always try to park the car with the gearbox in gear and not using the handbrake. Better for the rear discs too as using the handbrake on hot discs can make them warp because of non-uniform cooling where the pads clamp the disc.
