Yep. Once great household name that has just not moved with the times. The writing has been on the wall for a few years now.

Well they did have a go with the high-spec DCS-14n in the early days of digital:

They own $millions if not $billions worth of patents, I bet they get sold off a bit sharpish

This will break my Dads heart. He did his apprenticeship with Kodak, travelled all over the world for them, designed the highest selling camera in the world ever for them and ended up the Chief Designer for Kodak in the UK. He has always been so proud of his time at Kodak.

What a shame that Kodak did not play the digital market properly. When you look for good, cheap personal digi cameras you'll find Panasonic, Samsung and Sony. Not Kodak. Beaten at it's own game by companies renowned for TV and music players.

Canons early dSLR's were rebadged kodaks, and kodak make a lot of medium format sensors too (Leica S2/645D etc).

They just didnt move fast enough with the digital age.

I don't know. But looking at that photo, it seems to have a few Nikon design cues in it...

I looked at this at the time. It came out after the Nikon D1X, was more expensive, not as good, had crap battery life and was only rated to 30,000 actuations*. (The D1X - a quarter of a million). It was in fact, a dog of the worst order.

I think you'll find the Nikon has Kodak design cues.

I think I was still using my T90 when that came out. Much lighter to carry around.

Didn't it have a lot of pixels, or summit? Was a Nikon-mount and a Canon-mount version. And even if it was rubbish, so were (in relative terms) the first Nikons and Canons.


Just seemed to give up - a bit like Fuji - when there was some potential there......

Even sadder - a quote from the Mirror "The company can trace its roots back to 1880. Its highs include Neil Armstrong’s use of a Kodak camera as the first man on the moon in 1969.

Six years later, it developed the world’s first digital camera. But bosses locked it away fearing it would undermine its traditional 35mm film business. It was the beginning of the end for the firm which once employed thousands of workers in the UK

I recall something about Kodak being derived from 'ko-dak' - the sound of the shutter in its early cameras. Or is that an urban myth?

So who's going to make sensors for Leica now then? The Kodak sensors had nice a colour output compared to others on the market.

Such a shame. No wonder their factory in Harrow has been getting smaller and smaller over the last few years.
