My Griff has decided to rupture its downpipe from the manifolds. You can imagine that the noise is, well bloody noisy. I've booked into the garage 6 miles from where I live for repairs. Thing is I intend to keep as quite as possible (difficult) if I get pulled up what might be the consequences. Can't tow the car in for fear of damage to bodywork and truck hire costs a fortune.

I'm sure if you tell them that the exhaust has failed you're driving to a garage, they will be satisifed.

From my 'unnoficial, not on duty' opinion, if I were on duty, and stopped you driving the aural version of automotive armageddon, I would listen to your version of events.

Depending how busy I was, I would be more than happy to take you to the garage. This would

1. Help you out.
2. Satisfy my coppers nose that you were indeed telling the truth.

Hope you sort it out!

Edited to add, I didn't directly answer your question....In your case, no, I would not issue you with a ticket.

Surely the fact that its booked in (and local) would mean just a quick phone call (if stopped) to the garage

Yes, however, technically he is breaking the law by driving it on the highway by contravening the decibel level.....Probably by a heck of a lot....

Besides it is always nice to have a chat with griff owners....

Thanks, lets hope that the local BiB are reasonable, if I could get under I could exhaust wrap it, or if I could get it on my ramps, wish I had those hydralic rams they use on TOCA.

Surely you'd just issue him with a rectification notice anyway Mike?

this question came up before.. i thought the answer was that there is no decibel level for cars? If they pass the eurotest when new, subsequently modified, the only thing you can do them for is disturbing the peace, or some such?

If there is a decibel limit for cars, no not the new type approval one, what is it please ?

Got to be honest here, I'm not sure of decibel level off the top of my head. I don't tend to worry about it too much at work unless it is overly stupid, and if that is the case there are more effective, permanent solutions.

VDRS is a way of dealing with it, but to save paperwork and general buggerence factor I would be happier dealing by way of a chat. However, every situation is different. A well balanced chap with a griff en route to fix it is different to a bonehead scraping the floor with his banger emitting antisocial noise from every orifice [human and mechanical variety]

Standard RV8 breaks that?
Not just bein awkward - of genuine interest as I have sports exhaust
I really thought there actually is no limit, once the car has type approval (but there is for bikes)
so i just have to be considerate in residential areas / unsocial hours

sorry not meant to turn into thread hijack

broken exhaust... leave the roof off! (unfit for use, fumes in cabin)

Agreed... my S was measured at 127.7dBA...! (and it's still got the baffles in it!)

Nice to know that if you've got a nice car and a nice accent, and a nice attitude the Bibs give you different treatment than someone they personally consider might be scum.

I'm thinking of building a road legal track day car in the form of a lowered nova with 1.3 engine, twin webers, and a fairly loud exhaust. Can I expect to be stopped , if I decide to wear a base ball cap and forget to shave for a day or so ?

Jacko, you read too deeply into my thread, do not put words into my mouth, or maybe I worded it incorrectly.

If you have operated as a Police Officer, you will know when there is something not right and when something is when dealing with someone you have stopped.

Right accent, etc etc makes no difference. I stopped a Bentley mulsanne turbo containing what turned out to be a criminal from a different force area, no amount of good accent, or " You only stopped me because you will never afford one of these " makes any difference.

And lets face it, if you go haring around the streets in a shed, with a bad attitude, yes, you will get stopped. If however, you particular fancy is to stick head sized exhausts on a Nova, but it is up together and a decent car, then if you were on your way to have a defect rectified you would get the same treatment in the way of help from me.

If, however you gave significant attitude, then I would certainly raise you a notch or two, ending in whichever prosecution you see fit.
But generally I don't have to get that far before people understand me..

Dunno if there is one, but my Tiger kit-car had to pass a 101dB limit at 3/4 max revs, 0.5m and at 45 degrees from the exhaust for SVA regs.

Just testing you.

I have actually been stopped a few times in my career as a nutter, and have only ever found the Bibs polite and helpful, if occasionally a little (I was going to write arrogant but that's too strong) supierior. I have always adopted an attitude which is : I can understand why you have stopped me, but I think if you let me explian you will understand better the situation.

I am a little worried that the rear arches of my Fully Road Legal Mk2 cavalier might encourage road side checks, and am putting off lowering it until I've sorted the arches.

Oh and the NOVA joke - No way ever will this happen.
