Hi all,

I'm new here so hopefully I am posting in the right place smile

I currently am driving a Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.25 which has been passed on to me. I am a bit concerned about petrol consumption as it seems to be drinking it like it's going out of fashion. I tested how many miles I got out of a full tank of petrol recently and I got just over 180 before the fuel light came on. I mainly drive to and from work, to cinema and shops during week which averages about 70 miles per week. I do get stuck in traffic when driving to and from work but it's no longer than 10 minutes each way which I know uses up fuel. I'm having to fill it up every two weeks.

Does this sound right or is the car burning too much fuel? I can't compare it with anything because this is the first time I have had a car permanently.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm torn between keeping this car going or just getting a new one which would potentially be more economical.

Thanks

Kristin

Without knowing the size of the tank it's hard to work out. But the tank in my mother ka is only 42 litres so would espect your fiesta to be the same. 180 miles doesn't seem to far of what my mother gets in her ka.

The winter will knock a lot of fuel economy as much as 25% due to the car being colder for longer also more drain on the engine when you have heaters, lights etc on for longer. Don't forget if your fuel gauge is bring the light on you got atleast another 20-30 miles worth of petrol left in the tank.

The best way to check is to leave it till the tank is as empty as you can fill the tank up to the brim then drive till its empty again. Do this a couple of times and you should get a accurate amount of fuel your using.

Looking at the specifications,

Fuel Consumption (Urban) 31.7 mpg
Fuel Consumption (Extra-Urban) 50.4 mpg
Fuel Consumption (Combined) 41.5 mpg
Fuel Tank Capacity 40 litres

It appears, something is wrong.
