Anyone got any real world experience with these?

Looking for some opinions.

I had a 51 plate 140bhp a couple of years ago. Nice handling and economical. Smart looks, and only a burst radiator in the time we had it.
Premium spec had an electric moonroof, Sony CD, digital climate and leather. They dont all have rear spoilers, we bought one painted and fitted for just £120 (ebay). Wheels get tatty and may benefit a referb.
Early cars can use oil. Pre 2002 may have a high oil usage, as ours did. It used a litre every 6-800 miles.
The T sport 190 bhp was not affected from what I have read into it.

I currently have a 53 plate 140bhp one. I really like it, but then most things were going to be better than my previous civic. I'd look for a facelift model which I believe is 53 plate onwards as these don't suffer the same oil usage issues. As said above the oil use didn't affect the 190bhp model. celica-club.co.uk is a good source knowledge if you haven't already found it.

Thanks for the answers, Mrs Hetfield has her heart set on one so I want to find out as much info as possible and view it before she buys. Last time she brought a car home on her own it was 2 different colours lol.

Try and get a face lift gen7, as some pre face lift suffer from high oil use and finally death rattle. So for best results get 03 and newer...

VVTL-i 190 is the one you really wont, on any year there fine, but lift bolts in the engine can brake they cost 35p each and there is two of them, take about an hour to fit and anyone with a socket set can do it.

In any case a celica is a good and fun to drive and generally very reliable...

I had a Celica T Sport (190 VVTLi) for 2.5 years and wont say a bad word about it, a great car. Would definitely look for a 190 version rather than the 140 if you can.

An '02 140 BHP version has been purchased at handy money, wouldn't have been my first choice but she loves it. Seems to be a good one, everything is working as it should be. Lets see how it goes! smile

Got an 04, and very pleased with it tbh. Got all the toys, inc spoiler and sunroof.

Good fun to drive, nice steering and reasonably torquey motor, good mpg and jap reliability - whats not to like ?

Mine needs boot lid struts which I believe is common ans they are about £90/pair.

Wheels on mine were refurbed by the selling dealer as they looked like they had just come out of the sea.

Yeah, hers needs bootlid struts too! Bootlid only stays half way up. You could work with it but I can see it being a PITA. I work in a scrappy and theres a full crate of them so hopefully I'll find something similar for free smile

I have not had the problem myself it seams very hit and miss, if you look at the celica uk club forum lots of people have guides etc to fix the problem...

get some pictures up on readers rides! Look forward to what you think of the 7th gen celica. I'd very much like to own one of these as my next car. Seem like a good balance of looks, economy, reliability and performance.

My 02 plate 140 does indeed drink oil like others have said, engine died at 78,000 miles but it was my fault for being an idiot and running the engine dry. The fact that I got a new engine rather than scrap it should indicate how much I like the car, checking the oil is now a religious procedure.

IMO there's a lot of tacky mods out there and lets face it, most of these cars have been ragged at some point. Good idea to have a pint of cynical bd before you view anything.

Still can't understand why the sunroof's called a moonroof though?

How different are these to the ST202 frog eye Celica that it superseded? Reason I ask is I really wouldn't mind having one. But SWMBO had enough of the previous dog we had so much so that she now hates the Celica name.

Been offered one of these which is sounding very appealing for Mrs, BUT it's a 2001 Y reg, now it's only done 40 odd k miles, two previous owners, last one several years and full history. Price is attractive, car is very clean, so my question is just how big is this oil consumption gamble? .... A Toyota main dealer contact says he can't really recall doing many (more an Avensis issue) though his knowledge is only till about 2006, yet the Celica Club website s quite damning

It seems most people only go on the celica club when they have the problem, makes it look worse...

If its a 190 or a face lift its not a problem...

If its a pre face lift 140 and its been serviced then there should not be a problem. The problem can bypass you if you look after it: my friend has a 1999 140 from new now with overu 100k and going strong...

You concur with my thoughts, if the history checks out, it'll basically had oil changes less than every 5k, so as long as a decent oil has been used and it hasn't been thraped to an inch of its life, the oil should have had chance to break down and gunge the oil ways up.

One tip my ex Toyota contact gave me was check the dipstick is still silver coloured rather than discoloured and golden
