Knocking noise and reduced engine power.....
Discussion
Hi,
wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this...
I bought a 997.2 about two months ago with 13K on the clock and I've done around 4K miles since - it has a "warranty" so we'll find out soon enough how good it is.
Anyway, the warranty co's offices are closed tonight and I'm hoping to try and get a feel of what could be the problem beforehand. The car has started making a loud tapping sound this evening - its a very noticeable "tap" and when the car was cold did it about once every four or five seconds - like something was trying to engage and failing - the best description I can think of is it sounds like a long spring tapping a large empty plastic bottle - really noticeable around the coolant tank area, but audible both in an outside the car. It does it a few times then stops. After a while the "reduced engine power" warning comes up which clears on a switch-off, switch on - now the "Check engine" warning light is illuminated.
I can't work out if its something minor or not - the engine actually sounds quite rattly (maybe more than it was on the coolant tank side, but I couldn't swear to it).
Would value your opinions / thoughts...
thanks

Got to love the new level of porka reliability. Porsche what's happening?? How are these piles of pooh leaving the factory. After 8 porsches, I doubt I'd buy another "modern"one.
Just look on eBay and auto trader at how many 996 and 997s have had new engines, rebuilds or are being sold with an expired engine. I was either lucky or sold up before I was unlucky.
Good luck, hopefully it's nothing major or your warranty is a good one.

Autoprotect - I've seen mixed reviews of every one from every company - so am open minded to them, I got it via the dealer who sold the car...
I've also got breakdown rescue and am tempted to call them in the morning to see if they can fix it; worst case they can recover it, though it is still drivable - my one concern is if somethings seriously wrong i.e. now wearing very rapidly or broken completely, i don't want to be adding to any damage by driving it....

With any luck it really won't justify that comment Just look on eBay and auto trader at how many 996 and 997s have had new engines, rebuilds or are being sold with an expired engine. I was either lucky or sold up before I was unlucky.

Does no part of you think you had a duty to stop and leave alone until someone can come and have a look? You've got a problem and so in an attempt to make it worse you keep starting it and you keep driving it to see what happens.
I'm sorry if I come across as being harsh but you can't just keep prodding an injured animal with a stick in the hope it gets better and then cry when the vet says he's going to have to put it down.
It is very easy to turn a £1,000 bill into a £10,000 one.
Good luck and fingers crossed it's nothing too serious.

Fair comment - I was getting it back (just a very few miles) to somewhere safe... I know I have a warranty, but I'm naturally curious, there's lots of great experience on here and I'm trying to get a feel for what I'm looking at (and so I can plan how / when i can get back home)...

Count me in with those that advise you to stop running the engine and get the car (flat bedded!) to a qualified shop for proper diagnosis of the source of the noise.
The noise is probably a sign that something serious is wrong internally but no amount of running is going to do the engine any favors.
The check engine light is on and knowing what error codes are associated with this would of some value to someone wanting to offer his WAG as to what is possibly going on, but really, even if the WAG turned out to be spot on the money just knowing what's wrong is not going to fix the problem.
I hope the noise is nothing serious and I hope the warranty comes through for you.
Best of luck!
Oh, I might point out that the car with around 13K miles on it is still 'new' ('new' in that the car has fewer miles than the IIRC 24K miles the good people of the UK get on their new Porsches and the 50K miles of warranty we in the USA get on our Porsches) though I guess the new car warranty has expired on time if not miles?
Too late now but had the car been driven more this problem while it might have happened at the same mileage would have happened sooner and thus the new car warranty would have come into play.
Sincerely,
Rockster.

Think we should wait for an OPC to diagnose the problem before making sweeping comments. It is also a gen2 997 so possibly something more simple than engine failure like you are implying!! I had an autoprotect warranty on my last car which was an e46 m3. I had a 2.5k bill for the smg pump and actuator which they initially refused by claiming I had driven the car with a fault light on and had caused the subsequent damage to the actuator.
Cut a long story short I sent them a strong worded letter that they were liable under the terms and conditions and failure to pay would mean a small claims court affair. The week after they agreed to the work and paid out fine.
Over the next 2 years I claimed for many other issues like alternator, window mech, parking sensor, O2 sensor and they paid up each time without quibble. Didn't even pay for the warranty as the previous owner took it out for 4 years and it was transferable!
My advice is be careful what you say to autoprotect - any wrong comment and they will use it against u. Play it smart and they will pay out fine no stress!
