Dear PH,

I was hoping for some advice from more knowledgable sorts than I.

further to this thread http://pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f... I went and looked at a P plate 850 T5 (not an 850R sadly, insurance would not allow) with 150K miles on.

overall the car seems in pretty good shape, with the exception of an ominous creak coming from the rear suspension.

i must confess to not knowing that much about these cars, what sort of rear suspension do they have? is a creak likely to just be worn bushings, or something more costly? and what sort of money could i expect to spend on getting the suspension sorted?

it was MOT'd in october, and the only advisory was an oil leak which has since been sorted, though the front tyres are also seriously worn, so i wonder if there is anything else the tester overlooked when it was done :/

i know the short answer is that there are loads of 850's about, so its worth finding a good one, but ive actually struggled to find that many manual estate T5s, and the only other two i found have been sold already.

thanks,

Tom

Could be that some bushes need greasing up, or the ARB links are worn, or any number of things. Multilink suspension systems can be a pain to find noises on.

I had one of those, lovely motor.

In the load area, beneath the "wood", there are two "rubbery metal things" (tech desciption lol), that I can't remember the name of now, it is two pieces of metal bonded together with rubber, one each side.

Apparently they fail often, and were indeed quite cheap, but one of those was making the sort of noise you describe.

yeah, im going to take it for a proper test drive tomorrow to see whether its tolerable on the road.

if its not, and it turns out to not be the widget mentioned above, then am i likely looking at big bills as its multilink?

(also, impressive that its a multilink system, very fancy)
