Fiat 500 - Which engine?
Discussion
What are peoples experiences with the different types of engine?
Looking on the Fiat website it seems they are all very close performance wise; taking 0-60 as an example...
1.2 11.0
1.4 10.5
1.3d 10.7
Also looking at the specs it seems roadtax and economy, and one would presume insurance cost, the 1.2 and 1.3d are better choices than the 1.4? Does the twinair have a different engine as well?
Any owners in from central london, what are they paying for insurance and who with?

TwinAir is an 875cc petrol turbo engine, giving 85bhp and 107lb-ft. It also returns a useful 68mpg (official, not tested) and slots in at under 100g/km CO2 (VED band A)
It's as torquey and more powerful than the 1.3 diesel and gives the same MPG
Apparently, despite only being a twin cylinder, it actually sounds OK too - nicely off-beat

Ours has the 1.2 and it can struggle on hills, real world mpg seems to be about 50.
This ^, and I thought the 0-60 was more like 12s. However, (when new) the 1.2 has the lowest cost of entry to 500 ownership and that's worth factoring in to your decision.I've been very pleased with my 1.2. The performance is absolutely fine for what it is and I've not missed having a bigger engine.
TA is going to be under the congestion charge limit (think it is £10 to register), had my TA for 6 months as a sh#tty for the city and work, i wouldn't put much relevance on the 0-60 to be honest, off the line to 30 these are good fun (given lightness) and the TA torque is great on the motorway, mine sits at 70 all day long, only the forthcoming VW Up GT is likely to tempt me out of it
engine noise makes the car for me, in reality i get 40-50mpg from it

Twinair got to be best for London due to low CO2
My mother has a Twinair which replaced a 1.2. The 1.2 was OK for urban use but felt a bit underpowered on motorways, had to change down to 4th to keep up momentum on hills and not much good for A road overtaking, good on fuel though averaging 52 mpg and quite a sweet little unit. The TA initially struggled to hit 40mpg but now seems to be up to 45, it is a characterfull little engine and a lot quicker than the 1.2.
Only driven a 1.4 once and found it to be a bit harsh and not much better than the 1.2, biggest surprise was a JTD I drove recently - it was a flying machine, loads of torque and refined too. Auto Italia did a group test recently and they concluded that the JTD was almost as quick as the abarth in real conditions and averages 55mpg.
