I picked up a copy of this months Car on Wednesday and its really rather good in my opinion, with plenty of interesting motors and a good interview with Mikka Hakkinen. Next months looks good too, so as an EVO subscriber since 1998 who has found this months issue a bit average, Im starting to think, EVO or CAR?

Troouble is, having every single issue of EVO, the OCD in me doesnt want to stop now...arggghh!!

Anyone else have this sort of dilemna? Is Car getting back to form at last? With Jethro swapping from Car to EVO, he perhaps doesnt agree...

Was thinking same thing recently. Used to subscribe to both but just got fed up with them. Bought EVO last month and it was dire. Nothing of any substance in it. Bought Car the other day and it was superb, martin brundle interview, the guy who owns Ginetta interview and some typical "old" Car stuff... Almost tempted to subscribe again.
PS unless he's gone back, Jethro went from EVO to Car.

I subscribed to Car in September - really pleased, I read each one cover to cover. Better than evo now I think, and I used to read evo avidly in the early days.

If you stop buying it, something bad will happen.

HTH.

Evo for me, though it's become very hit and miss recently. I liked the one with the XJ220 in it (well I like anything with the 220!), but the one after was just dull. It's a cliche here now, but any page with a Porsche on it might as well be blank as far as my reading is concerned, I've been overloaded with them. If only they would do a porsche-free month I'd be a happy man!

I've tried all the mags, still buying Car after 31 years (and still detest the amount of adverts - greedy fookers).

P.s. Ment to say I think the title names sum up the difference and I'd imagine 'EVO' would be more off putting for some.

Car is an intelligent read, makes me laugh, absorbs me. Glitzy EVO goes more sideways and tickles the infant in me - still a quality read.

They're not weekly, the subscription deals are often half price so unless you're scratching round for a bowl of rice buy both........

CAR is better for bigger picture stuff and industry news, but isn't exclusively focused on interesting metal. Worth buying both.

I've subscribed to both for years. But of course you're reading about the same new cars a lot of the time. And the Evo attitude of "it's noiser, more cramped, shoddily built, more basic, less comfortable, uglier, and more expensive, but on full opposite lock at 110mph on a race track it has more adjustability so we're awarding it the clear winner" to every group test just became a bit, well irrelevant to be honest.

So I dropped Evo and continued with Car. They still performance test, but it's not all about totally improbable driving that only a race driver on a circuit could achieve. They also review a much broader range of cars.

Car did go through a very dark patch when Jason Barlow became editor though. He tried to turn it into an automotive GQ, including a big swanky annual media party only instead of photos of Liz Hurley talking to George Clooney it was full of captioned photos of "Jeff Nobody, chief door lock designer of Perudo chats to Audrey Smith, assistant clerk, filing division of Kia UK". It was so bad it was almost funny! Almost...

+1. LJKS, must have been turing in his grave, I reckon if he'd been alive he'd have jumped ship to Autocar too.

You can get EVO for £1 per 3 issues. Just keep cancelling the subscription and they offer you the deal again a few months later.
Octane too.

...and they also take the royal p*ss out of "loyal" subscribers IMHO, who get naff all unless they cancel and re-subscribe periodically.

Frankly these days if you buy one copy of Evo you won't need to buy another. Every edition is just endless BMW and Porsche arse-kissing frankly.

Scary.

I've done it twice so far.
