Replacement rear shockers (1988 S1)

I need to replace leaking rear shockers, would really like to fit exactly the same Spax ones, as the springs are in great condition. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find some? If not are there any alternatives that will accommodate original springs?

By the look of those dampers I suspect you'll find they are well and truly knackered and not damping well. Perhaps the fronts are in a similar state. Mixing new and old dampers is a bad idea because damping gradually degrades with age, and significant variations in the amount of damping can affect the car's handling. (It is probably safer to have four fairly tired dampers rather than two brand new and two fairly tired.)

Good news though - springs are cheap to buy and if you look for alternative damper suppliers you will find plenty of options. Depending on the condition of the springs it may be no bad thing to replace them anyway - the spring stiffness is highly sensitive to the coil thickness and even small amounts of corrosion can make a significant difference. Plus springs occasionally sag with age, which can throw the handling out. If at all possible, I suggest you replace all the springs and dampers as a set.
